South Island ▷ Marlborough ▷
Picton is where most people enter the South Island and a lot of them bolt straight through, which is fair enough. But it's worth at least a half day. The waterfront is genuinely nice on a calm day, and Picton Toastie Lords is one of those simple things you'll think about more than you expect. Get a toastie, sit by the water, decompress from the ferry.
The Marlborough Sounds are what make this area special, and the best way to see them is by boat. Less boat traffic, more sheltered coves, better vibe. Worth knowing that the water taxi scene out of Picton has a promo code worth using if you're heading out that way. The RANKERS promo code gets you something back on water taxi trips out of Picton.
The top highlights in this area for me are the boat-access lodges. Lochmara Lodge and Hopewell Lodge are both accessed by boat from Picton and are genuinely unique. If you're after a night away from the campervan, these are the ones. Special without being try-hard.
No freedom camping in Picton town itself. If that's your situation, the Waikawa Bay Holiday Park on Waikawa Road is the quieter, more pleasant option compared to the main town sites. Marina views, away from the ferry traffic. Or if you don't mind a thirty minute drive toward Blenheim, the Wairau Diversion freedom camping spot is the best in the wider area by a good margin.
