South Island ▷ Marlborough ▷
Blenheim is basically the base camp for Marlborough wine country, and honestly that's reason enough to stop here. Seventy percent of NZ's grapes grow in this region and the Sauvignon Blanc is world class. My pick is to do a guided wine tour rather than bike it. The guides are winemakers themselves, you'll get into parts of the wineries bike tourers don't see, and you don't have to worry about running out of puff. The RANKERS promo code gets you a discount on the tour, which is a nice bonus on top of an already good day.
Getting your campsite right here matters more than most places, because it affects whether your wine tour can pick you up. The Wairau Diversion freedom camping site is the pick for me. Tour pickup available, fishing at dusk and dawn, and on a clear day you can see Mt Tapuae-o-Uenuku in the distance. If you want full facilities, Spring Creek Holiday Park is right next to a crystal clear spring river with tame eels, which is pretty cool. There's also the Blenheim Bridges Holiday Park if you need something closer to town. Worth noting that Whites Bay campsite is lovely and private but no tour pickup, so factor that in before you commit.
If aviation history is your thing, the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre is worth a look and the RANKERS promo code works there too. And when it's time to eat, Arbour Restaurant near Renwick is the good stuff.
