Stop Here, Full Stop

If you're driving between Marlborough and Nelson, Pelorus Bridge is the stop you don't skip. The Pelorus River runs this wild aqua colour when conditions are right, and there are heaps of swimming spots along it. The campsite among the Kahikatea trees is genuinely lovely, though it gets absolutely rammed in NZ holiday season. Worth knowing.

The Swing Bridge Walk is the One

There are a few short walks here. My pick is the circle loop track out to the swing bridge and back. Easy enough for kids, satisfying enough for everyone else. The rest of the loop is fine if you want to keep moving, but the bridge is the drawcard. Oh, and if you're an LOTR nerd, this is where the dwarves-in-barrels scene was filmed.

Quieter Spot Just Down the Road

If the main swimming hole is packed, drive about 20 seconds south to the Totara Flat Picnic Area. Small carpark, short walk, much less people. Worth knowing before you turn up on a busy summer day.

If you're continuing on toward Havelock and want to get out on the water, the Pelorus Sound Mail Run Cruise is my pick for experiencing the Sounds. Departs Havelock, far less boat traffic than Picton, and the RANKERS promo code gets you a discount on the cruise.
