South Island ▷ West Coast ▷
Honestly, Greymouth is more of a functional stop than a destination. It's the largest service town before you hit the Wanaka Region, so if you need to stock up on supplies, this is the place to do it. I tend to roll through rather than linger, especially with Punakaiki pulling me north and Hokitika to the south.
There's some decent beachfront freedom camping on either side of the Grey River, which is genuinely pleasant. A holiday park right by the sea is a solid enough base if you need a proper stopover, and there's a campervan-focused option nearby too. Just know that the real action on this stretch of the West Coast is in the detours either side of town, not in town itself.
