South Island ▷ West Coast ▷
Punakaiki is a small spot that punches way above its weight, but you need to time things right or you'll just be shuffling through with a bus crowd at midday. The two headline walks work on opposite tides. Pancake Rocks and the blowholes are best at high tide when the blowholes are doing their thing properly. The Truman Track through the rainforest to that dramatic limestone overhang is a low tide job. Get those two lined up and you're already winning.
Because there's barely any motel accommodation here, most of the rental car crowd moves on. That's the gift. Campervans have this place to themselves in the early mornings and at sunset, which is exactly when it's best. The Beach Camp is a great base, and the sunset campsite down at McMillan Rd gives you beach fire territory with a west-facing outlook. On a clear evening, gather some driftwood, set up the camp chairs, and just watch the sun drop. Between April and January you'll likely see hundreds of Westland Petrels circling out over the waves before crash-landing into the forest behind you. Big, dark birds. Pretty wild to watch.
The Pororari River walk is an easy wander at any tide, or you can hire kayaks or SUPs and head upriver, which gets interesting once you're into the gorge section. And once it's dark, the Punakaiki Cavern comes alive with glowworms. It's free, it's only a short walk, and it's pretty special even if it's not the most polished glowworm experience around. Worth the short drive or walk from camp.
