South Island ▷ West Coast ▷
Honestly, Westport's big highlight for me is the West Coast Pie Co. They've built their whole thing around turning pest animals into proper tucker and the pies are genuinely great. It's a bit of a one-of-a-kind experience on the coast and worth stopping for.
Westport is mainly where the road forks. Head north and you're into Karamea territory, which is a solid detour if you have the time. Head south and the West Coast starts opening up properly. If you're in need of supplies before pushing further into the coast, this is a good spot to sort yourself out. The holiday park here is a decent base if you need a night before heading up to Karamea or down toward Punakaiki. There's also rafting on offer around here if you're after a bit of action before moving on.
