Don't Let the Algorithm Run Your Trip

The Wanaka Region has been well and truly discovered. The Wanaka Tree, the lavender farm, the same AI itinerary everyone seems to arrive with. It's real and it's fine, but I'd caution against letting it eat too many of your days. If you're on a two-week South Island trip, the natural places away from the crowds will reward you more. That said, there's genuinely good stuff here if you're selective about it.

The Peaks Are Worth It, But Go Stupid Early

The hikes are the real drawcard. Roys Peak has views that'll stop you in your tracks, but it's instagram-heavy and you can end up in a single-file line with an hour-long wait for your "solo" shot. My preference is Isthmus Peak over at Lake Hawea. Still a solid grunt with no shade, but a fraction of the people. For either one, leave at 3 or 4am if you can manage it. I know that sounds rough, but you'll thank yourself. If you want something quieter still, the drive into the Matukituki Valley for the Rob Roy Glacier track has escaped the algorithm mostly because the access road keeps the crowds honest. Larger motorhomes won't manage it, but campervans generally can.

Town, Food and the Practical Stuff

Wanaka town is worth a night or two for the food scene alone. It's a big step up from what you'll find on the West Coast or around Tekapo. Big Fig is a good shout. Park on Ardmore St opposite Pembroke Park rather than trying to squeeze into town. Puzzling World is legitimately good if you've got kids, go at opening time. There's also jet boating on the river and some excellent rock climbing in a cracking location, and the RANKERS promo code gets you a discount on a few of those Wanaka activities.

Where to Sleep

For camping, Kidds Bush Reserve by Lake Hawea is a real beaut of a DOC site, just note the access road rules out bigger rigs. For full facilities in the area, The Camp along Lake Hawea is the pick, or there are a couple of solid holiday parks closer to Wanaka township if you need them. And if you're passing through Makarora, the jet boat experience up there is worth a look, with the RANKERS promo code applying there too.
