South Island ▷ Wanaka Region ▷
I'll be straight with you. The algorithm has eaten Wanaka up a bit. The Lavender Farm, that famous tree sitting in the lake - it's just a tree. These things end up on every AI-generated itinerary and they're not what this place is really about. Wanaka is worth your time, but maybe not the 2-3 days I keep seeing people allocate, especially if you're also pencilling in a stint in the Queenstown Region. Be deliberate with your days here and you'll leave happy.
Where Wanaka genuinely delivers is the food. Coming from the West Coast or Tekapo, the options there are pretty sparse, so when you roll into Wanaka it's time to eat well. Big Fig does slow food served fast with solid vege and vegan options. Burrito Craft for Mex, Muttonbird if you want traditional NZ done properly. There's good stuff around.
Campervan parking in the town centre is a bit of a pain. I'd pull up on Ardmore St opposite Pembroke Park - there's usually plenty of room and it's only a 5-10 minute lakefront stroll into things. Saves you getting wedged into tight spots that weren't built with a campervan in mind.
On the activity front, Wanaka punches well. Puzzling World sounds gimmicky but it's genuinely good - they've kept improving it over the years and it's a real family winner. Arrive at opening time or it gets busy. The RANKERS promo code gets you 10% off there. Jet boating on the river is one of the better wilderness jet boat experiences in the South Island, and the promo code works there too. If you're after something more vertical, the rock climbing setup here is relatively new and very good - spectacular location, and again the RANKERS promo code takes a bit off. There's also scenic flights and watersports on the lake if that's your thing, both with promo code savings on the table. The Wanaka Top 10 holiday park is a solid base if you need full facilities for the night.
