Where the Algorithm Hasn't Found You Yet
Makarora sits up at the top end of the Wanaka Region, and it's got a genuinely different feel to the busier spots further south. The access road into the surrounding valleys is long, winding, and not always drivable after rain. That's exactly why it's stayed quiet. Larger motorhomes will struggle, but if you're in a campervan and happy to take it slow, you're in for a treat.
The Siberia Experience
The standout thing here is the fly-walk-jetboat combo, and it's a proper one. You fly in by small plane, hike out through a remote valley, then get picked up by jet boat. It's the kind of day that's hard to top in this part of the South Island. Base Yourself Right
If you're staying the night, the holiday park at Wonderland is your best bet up here. Options are limited this far from town, so sorting your accommodation before you arrive is the move. The whole experience, drive included, will take up most of a day easily, so don't rush it.
