South Island ▷ Wanaka Region ▷
Lake Hawea doesn't get the same noise as Wanaka, and honestly that's part of the appeal. The drive along the lake climbs up high at one point and there's a section where you just pull over and take it all in. Five or ten minutes well spent. The lake is quite something from up there.
The Isthmus Peak Track is what I'd come here for. It's a solid grunt with no shade in summer, so an early start is the move. I've been recommending it for yonks as the less-crowded alternative to Roys Peak, which has gone a bit algorithm-heavy. Only a fraction of the people who hike Roys Peak will end up on Isthmus. The views are very, very good on a clear day. If you want to do the sunset option, Kidds Bush Reserve campsite is close by, but note the drive in there isn't suitable for larger campervans.
One more thing before you move on. There's a spot along the lake shore that is about as good as it gets for skimming stones. Flat stones, calm water, a bit of wrist snap and spin. Anyone aged 5 to 95 is in the running. Challenge your travel group and make the winner buy the pies. Very addictive.
For camping with full facilities, The Camp along the lake is your best bet. It's a solid base for the hike and the scenic drive both.
