South Island ▷
This region sits between Christchurch and the Queenstown Region and it's on pretty much every tour bus route going. But a campervan changes the game here. You get to move on your own schedule, stay where the buses can't, and be in the right place when the weather turns golden. Clear weather is everything at Mt Cook. In claggy conditions, the whole show disappears behind cloud. If you can stay flexible, this is the place to use that flexibility.
White Horse Hill campground puts you right in the middle of the hiking action, and at night it's just you and the mountains. Book it early, it's DOC's busiest for a reason. The Hooker Valley Track leaves from right here. Nearly everyone who visits Mt Cook does it, and fair enough, it's gobsmack stunning and pretty flat. Go early though, like early-early. The light is better and you'll beat the crowds. Don't skip the Tasman Valley either. The road is fine for all campervan sizes, and an entirely different world opens up. The glacier lake lookout walk is only 10-15 minutes and worth every step. If you want full facilities and a jaw-dropping view, Glentanner down the valley is a good shout too.
The whole region is a Dark Sky Reserve, and that matters. At Mt Cook, the night sky hits differently after a day spent looking up at those ridgelines. Lake Tekapo has the Mount John Observatory which runs tours through the night. Book ahead, these fill up fast and genuinely feel like a once-in-a-lifetime thing. The RANKERS promo code gets you a discount on stargazing and scenic flights out of Tekapo, and over at Mt Cook it covers ski plane and helicopter flights too. Worth knowing. The Church of the Good Shepherd is iconic but genuinely heaving during the day. Sunrise or sunset, skip the midday rush.
Fairlie is the gateway into the Mackenzie from Canterbury and the Fairlie Bakehouse is the reason to stop. They get busy but they're fast and the pies are the real deal. The RANKERS code also covers scenic flights and skydiving if you're after something with more air in it. And if you're heading south through Omarama, the clay cliffs are worth a look, just check the gravel access road is in decent nick before you commit.
