South Island ▷ Mount Cook - MacKenzie ▷
Omarama is mostly a blip on the road south, but the Clay Cliffs are genuinely worth a look if you're passing through. It's a proper badlands-style formation, unlike anything else in the region. The catch is the access road. It's a private gravel road and the condition of it varies wildly. We've turned back on it before, and so have plenty of others I've talked to. Worth checking conditions before you commit, because when it's rough, it's a real show stopper. There's a small entry fee per person, which feels a bit rich given how little seems to go into road maintenance.
If the road looks okay, go for it. If not, don't stress too much. There's a holiday park in town that makes a decent overnight stop between Lake Tekapo and the Queenstown Region, and the hot tubs here are worth knowing about if you've had a few big days on the hikes. A quiet soak in this kind of landscape hits differently.
