The Gateway That People Drive Through
Twizel sits between Lake Tekapo and Omarama on the Queenstown Region-to-Christchurch run, and most people treat it as exactly that - a drive-through. Which is fair enough, because the big draws of this region are Lake Pukaki and Mt Cook up the road. But Twizel is a decent base if you want a bed with facilities, and the holiday park on Lake Ruataniwha is solid for that.
The Dark Sky Stuff Is Legit Here
What Twizel does have going for it that people don't always clock is the stargazing. The whole Mackenzie Basin is a Dark Sky Reserve and Twizel is right in the middle of it.
