Tekapo's lake colour is just stupid good. Best viewed from a height, and Mount John is where you want to be for that. There's a road up if you need it, but the walk that zig-zags up through the shade is a goodie. Not too long, and once you break out onto the tops the views go in every direction. Give yourself time to wander around up there if the day is clear.
The Church of the Good Shepherd is a genuine bus tour magnet, so if you rock up at midday you're fighting for space with half of Asia. Sunrise or sunset, though, and it's a different story. While you're there, move right toward the lake and try some stone skimming. The rocks are perfect for it and it's genuinely fun.
This whole region sits inside a Dark Sky Reserve, and Tekapo is the place to actually do something about that. The observatory stargazing tours at Mount John run through the night and they are worth waking up for. Book early though, these fill up fast. The RANKERS promo code gets you a discount on stargazing if the observatory is booked out, which is worth knowing. If you have time in November through early January, the lupins along the lakefront at golden hour are another reason to stick around.
Tekapo is a big stop on the Queenstown to Christchurch bus route, which means peak hours at the main spots can be full-on. A campervan gives you the edge here. You can time your visits outside the busy windows and the town is a solid base for a night or two on your way through the MacKenzie.
