Manapouri is a tiny town, less than 300 people, and it has the kind of chill vibe that makes you want to slow down for a minute. But honestly, most people are here for one reason: Doubtful Sound. This is the departure point for what I'd call the best cruise in New Zealand. Remote, quiet, and genuinely wild in a way that Milford just isn't anymore.
The big tip here is to stay overnight in Manapouri so you can get on the early morning sailing. It's cheaper, it's quieter, and it gets you out there before the bus tours roll in from Queenstown. The Doubtful Sound day cruise has a cap on visitor numbers each day, which is exactly what makes it special. Use the RANKERS promo code and you're saving a solid chunk on top of already picking the better sailing. No brainer. There are a couple of decent holiday parks in town if you need a base, including a good option with motel units too.
While you're in town, pop into Ruth's three wee bookshops. They've become something of a local legend and are getting busier by the day, but worth a Kia Ora and a browse before you head out on the water.
