South Island ▷ Fiordland ▷
Milford Sound is the real deal scenically, but the timing thing is genuinely important here. Tour buses roll out of Queenstown at 6:30am and hit Te Anau around 8:30 to 9am. If you're in a campervan and staying up the road at a DOC site like Cascade Creek, you can be well ahead of all of that. Book the earliest cruise you can get on, and the RANKERS promo code takes a bit off the top too.
Not all cruises are equal out here. The one I'd point you towards actually pushes beyond the others and out into the Tasman Sea, which gives you a completely different perspective looking back into the fiord. It's the same price as the others, so it's a no-brainer. If you want something even more adventurous, sea kayaking is a cracking way to do it at water level, and the RANKERS promo code works on that too.
When you get back to the marina, the place transforms. Mid-morning it's a full circus. Cars everywhere, buses, people. There's a 15-minute lookout walk near the terminal that's worth doing while you're fresh, but once you're done, just go. The drive back to Te Anau between noon and 3pm is actually quieter than the morning run, because everyone's still out on the water. That's your window to stop at Falls Creek, Monkey Creek, and poke around the road properly on the way home.
