Doubtful Sound

The Best Cruise in NZ? Yeah, I Reckon

Doubtful Sound is the best day cruise in NZ for me. It's remote, it's quiet, and it just feels genuinely wild in a way that's hard to describe. They cap how many people can go in each day, which makes a real difference. You're not shuffling around a crowded deck trying to get a photo. You're just... out there.

Get On the Early Sailing

The big tip here is to stay in Manapouri the night before and get on the early morning sailing. It's cheaper than the later one, and the bus tours out of Queenstown haven't arrived yet, so it's noticeably quieter. The RANKERS promo code knocks a decent amount off the day cruise too, which helps given the price. If you're keen on something a bit more immersive, there's also overnight cruises where the same promo code applies.

Worth the Detour from Milford

Milford gets all the fame, and the drive there is genuinely incredible. But if you ask me, when it comes to the cruise itself, Doubtful wins. It's a different experience entirely. You take a boat across Lake Manapouri, then a bus over Wilmot Pass, and suddenly you're somewhere that feels like the rest of the world doesn't exist. Set aside a full day for it. It earns it.
