Possum Lodge Motel and Holiday Park

Enjoy Fiordland National Park, Lake Manapouri and Doubtful Sound from our scenic lakeside lodge. We're hidden away in the wee slice of paradise where the Waiau River meets the lake.

It's a wonderland for nature and wilderness lovers, nestled into a breathtaking Beech forest, and right on the edge of Fiordland National Park. Beautiful birds fill the trees above. Fantastic fish fill the river and lake below. Humble and historical, the accomodation is basic and the property has been a campground for over 100 years.

Both the lake and river are just a stone's throw away. Everything in the Manapouri Township is very walkable and bikeable. Take a 5-minute stroll down the river, under the Beech tree canopy, and you will find RealNZ's Doubtful Sound terminal. We can highly recommend taking a trip from there.

Small campsite which packed in a lot of facilities with great access to Real Nz centre via a 10min walk through beautiful woodland by the river.

Also a 10min walk the other direction to Fraser Beach.

Had toilets, showers, laundry, cooking and washing up facilities. Also had a lounge where people could eat, with lots of board games, also had a fire pit and bbq, and table tennis in another little social area.

    There are sand flies here.

Very friendly family run campsite. Close to the sound. Older style however very clean and the friendly atmosphere makes up for being older. Highly recommended as beginning or ending of anywhere in Fiordland

    12 & 13 April.

2 adults. $100. Quirky. Previous review as said hippy. Maybe, but definitely quirky.

Only 2 toilets for the site, one of which also has a shower. Separately there are 2 showers each for women and men.

The owners put a lot of work into keeping it clean and provide hand towels etc.

Thinking about this I have revised my rating from 8 to 9.

Only about 10 mins from the jetty for the Doubtful Sound cruise via a path through the woods. All in all a very good site

Small campsite in the forest with a homely vibe :) perfect place to do a Doubtful Sound tour, it’s just a ten minute walk.

I would recommend getting a powered site, the unpowered ones were extremely close together, like small parking lots. Lots of sandflies so we couldn’t really use the outdoor stuff. If you take a shower use the one inside the lounge!

All the services you can imagine, a beautiful place and the host even lit a campfire in the evening for everyone to gather. Taking the complimentary kayaks for a quick tour of the lake made everything perfect.

Nice and quiet and also located very closely to the doubtful sound cruise start.

    Great place.

Great showers and costed only $45 for two in a campervan (powered site). It has power sites, cabins and dorms, a fully equipped kitchen and a public lounge with some couch's and books. It also has a game barn.

Great staff. They do a bonfire at night, pretty awesome.

The town it's really small, but it's near a gorgeous forest and it has some great trails and several great tours.

    Good place for one night.

Forty dollars for two, unpowered site in a camper. We only used the hot showers. Good rubbish and recycling area. A group of loud people drinking around the outdoor fire at night right next to our van. I asked them to stop talking loudly at about 10.15 and they were fine with that. Camp rule is no noise after 10pm. Next time we would get a site away from the outdoor fire.

    A lovely atmosphere.

Terrific host and a quiet and cosy camp. Old school vibes here and there was a younger crowd during our one-night stay in an RV.

Lovely to see people using the tables outside to journal and it’s a social space.

The toilets and showers are basic, not very roomy, but they do the job. The women’s showers had wet bath towel matts that may have been left by campers because they weren’t in the men’s. The toilets were very clean but had a wet hand towel so I used my own.

This was ideally located for our tour of Doubtful Sound the following morning and I would strongly recommend it to backpackers and campers looking to make friends.

Small camps like this are not for everyone and are less suited to people who prefer a lot of privacy and space (smoke from a cabin camp fire did warrant us closing the windows). Families might want more space but we were happy enough for a one nighter.

Thank you for a great stay!

Henry has to be one of the best hosts in the entire country.

I was worried we would have problems because we couldn't make it to Possum Lodge before their 9pm closing time and our phones were not working to call NZ numbers. When we got there I found Henry almost immediately and he guided us to the last remaining powered site. He was friendly, laid-back and incredibly helpful at every step. We were doing the kayak tour the next day and he showed us the walking trail to the meeting point. We were able to leave our van at the park for no extra charge. Possum Lodge has everything you need for an enjoyable stay. It doesn't have its own dump station but Henry let me know that the nearby fire station has one.

Ganz kleiner und sehr charmanter Campingplatz.

Die Betreiber tun viel fürs feel Good ihrer Gäste.
