Owaka is the main service town for the Catlins, which makes it a handy base. It's not the destination itself, but it puts you within easy reach of some genuinely wild coastline. Stock up here, sort your fuel, and then get off the main road because that's where the Catlins actually happens.
The big thing with this part of the world is time. Those who spend 2 or 3 nights exploring properly tend to come away raving. Those who blast through in a day are often less sold. The detours off the main road are the whole point, whether that's the gravel road into Purakanui Bay, the walk out to Nugget Point for raw Pacific views and a good chance of NZ Sea Lions, or hunting down the waterfalls through native bush. A holiday park in Owaka makes a solid base for a few nights of exploring in different directions, or Catlins Newhaven Holiday Park nearby is another good option.
This stretch of coast is unlike the postcard stuff you'd photograph at Queenstown or Wanaka. It's rawer, wilder, and honestly more filling. Sub-Antarctic NZ Sea Lions lumped on the beach at Surat Bay, Hector's Dolphins at Curio Bay, and penguins at Roaring Bay near dusk if you're lucky. Head toward Papatowai for the most scenic section of the drive, and don't skip the Lost Gypsy Gallery if it's open. It's a proper good time.
