Information

Albert Town Camping Ground

The Albert Town campground is managed by Hampshire Holiday Parks Wanaka and does not have an onsite reception. No bookings are taken for this site, its first come first serve, you just pick your spot and pay on arrival via the eftpos machines at each entrance.

Albert Town is well serviced by a supermarket, eateries and a pub. There are plenty of bike tracks and hiking trails right on our doorstep just waiting to be explored, including the popular Deans Bank Track and Roys Peak. You can also enjoy a spot of fly fishing right at the campsite.

Wanaka is a great place for pretty much anything, there is mountain biking just down the road that follows the banks of the Clutha River, heaps of walking - Mt Iron is a goody for a great view, and of course anything regarding watersports.

    Definitely recommend!!

The facilities are basic but fair for the price, $11pn. You can pay eftpos at the machine which gives you flexibility on arrival (I always arrive late). The lot is huge so you don’t have to worry about finding space, I had no issue even during peak season. It’s along the river and beautiful bike trail. Almost half way between wanaka and lake hawea (less than 10 min drive to both). There’s no potable water, I just went to the natural spring in town to fill up every couple days (very nice cold water).

Very dusty and dry with roots all over the main park roads making it a bit difficult to drive.

LOTS of permenants too and didn't feel that welcoming. Lots of space however so if you can't find anywhere it's good.

Hands down the best spot we have come across in nearly a month.

For $10pp the setting is second to none with acres of space to choose from including lake front spots.

Toilet block of 4 flushing was always clean and stocked with paper, there is running water but not drinking water.

There's no showers but the laundrette is 10 minute walk away with showers, or you can dip in the lake or charge up a solar shower in the sun as there is so much room!!

There's nice walks nearby, jet boating across the road, rope swings set up by locals and over the bridge theres the laundrette, a Four Square, restaurant/bar, patisserie/cafe.... its all lovely.

Wakanda centre is 45 min walk or 8 min drive,

We stayed for 3 nights and we've not stayed anyway more than 24hrs to date!

Very good place to stay for a night, has regular toilets!

It has its charm, but it is located near a road and can be quite busy. We stayed one night and it fitted our needs, the 10 dollar per person cost seems reasonable, also considering its less than 10 min drive to the Wanaka boulevard

Lovely place to overnight just out of Wanaka.

Clean flushing toilets, bins, & plenty of space out on the grass or under the trees next to the river.

    Nice place to stay.

Plenty of spaces. Some beautiful spots along the river.

Quiet at night. Toilets were very clean during our stay.

    Convenient location near Wanaka.

There is no shower but the laundromat nearby provides shower for 2$ only.

Plenty of space in the large skip. Toilets weren’t bad either. Very little issue with sandflies. Water is available but it isn’t treated.

It’s $10 per person per night for a great spot only 10 minutes outside of Wanaka.

It’s well kept, toilets are clean. Lots of space so don’t worry about not getting a spot. Very easy to pay on site by cash or card, lovely spot next to the river. No drinking water.

One of the most beautiful spots we've stayed at.

Don't be mistaken, this is not a holiday park, it's a very basic doc like campsite.

But the place itself and the scenery is breathtaking, especially in autumn. Pine forest, river bank and mountains at the background.

We are fully self-contained, so facilities didn't matter.

Nice under the trees next to the river where you can swim.

Non-potable water that needs to be boiled before use

Don't really understand why this is a paid site (10 NZD pp).

The campground is nice, I guess. There are sheltered and more open spots. There was a weird situation with a long-term tent, taped together with duct tape. Strange noises came from the tent. Maybe a homeless person of some addiction issues? Weird vibe.

Close to Wanaka is a plus of course.

I'm not sure what people expect for $10pp p/n but this is an OK substitute to freedom camping.

The drinking water sign is the campsite covering themselves and saying be careful. The toilet flushing isn't great but on my second attempt it was easy mastered with a bit of patience, something a lot of people lack these days. There is a dog issue making a mess but, again, what do you expect for $10. It's a fabulous base to explore a very nice part of Otago (in my opinion) 🙂

    My favorite spot so far!!!

We were right by the river which was super calming and with sweet ducks, rabbits, herons, and some cat-like creature that gave us quite the fright by night!! Quiet, respectful campers around us. Nice flush toilets, and sinks to do your dishes. No soap, remember to bring your own.

Several toilets, flush and long drop, two sinks to do your dishes.

No drinking water! Toilets get cleaned every day. Unfortunately two of four sometimes have trouble flushing correctly :(

Many many spaces and on the other side of the road you have another campground, just have to drive 1km on gravel road.

I highly do not recommend it!

Worst camp so far in NZ.

Toilets are dirty, flushing is not working, water is undrinkable!!! They do not recommend it also for teeth brushing!

Grass is not cut, no place for recykled garbage..

    Noisy from the road.

Camping stuff (lady) will wake up everybody around at 6 in the morning if there is somebody, Who did not paid in the evening.. (10NZD/person)

A lot! of rabbit sh*t around...

    Just do not go there!

Nice spot, enough toilets (some long drop and some flush spread out on the site) plus a couple of sinks to do your dishes.

10$/pax is a reasonable price, given that there isn’t much else around. You can pay by card or cash at the entrance (which is a bonus for people like us who don’t carry cash).

If you want some privacy, park on the grassy areas in the middle or closer to the road. On both nights we stayed there, people tried (DESPERATELY) to squeeze between us and the trees even though the terrain was uneven, just to be near the river.
