Time: short and long rides....
Wicked riding!!! something for all abilities, super close to town. The Redwoods is one of the massive drawcards to Rotorua - very popular with locals and internationals and hosts some excellent mountain biking events.
There are many cycle shops in town if you need to hire equipment, or get things fixed. The mountain biking area is well sign posted, but if you are planning on doing some real exploring it pays to buy a map (available from any bike shop).
You can spend days finding you way around the forest - have fun!

Mega fun zooming along these mountain trails, the forest is stunning and the track is exciting but hard packed, so stable (we did level 1).
Really good fun!!!

The forest is just stunning. I did the Kids loop, Tahi and Dipper with my 7 year old son and survived. Harder than I expected but I made it. Tracks very well sign posted and the location is amazing. A lot of work going on to make more facilities for future mtb groups. Clean toilets and showers avail and cafe worth hot choc, banana smoothies etc. Rotorua MTB were really helpful with our hire and suggesting appropriate tracks for us.

Great MTB trails, very well maintained.
I hired a bike from Mud Cycles, it was in a great condition and the owner of the company was very friendly - he even took me to the start of the trails. Kiwis are awesome!

New Zealands premier MTB destination, 100's of kms of awesome riding, there is even a shuttle in weekends and school holidays, Billy T & split endz 2 of my favourites, there are maps on boards throughout
the forest but it pays to get your own if you want to really explore, I think they are only a couple of bucks. The national downhill is only for the brave.

Best place to mtb ever!
Can be a bit daunting first time with the sheer number of trails and sorting out a workable route so go with someone who rides there often of a similar ability otherwise for brave or regular mtbs a fav is to take the shuttle then do billy t - > split enz - > pondy etc then head off to do mad if you don't and be rude not to. For a first time out or for the more sedate/kids do the bottom loop of tahi through to dipper or try there is the beautiful new river trail.

very well prepared tracks, but due to logging some was closed what was not shown at the entrance maps...so i climbed up to some tracks for "nothing".
also the maps (and nice fabric map) was a little bit confusing for newbie’s as there are so many tracks at this "little" spot.
