Welcome to New Zealand's most comprehensive database of freely available camping information. This is the only travel map of its kind in NZ.
Welcome to The Strand
Our community consider ourselves fortunate to be kaitiaki / guardians of this unique forest, mountain and
river environment. We want you to enjoy our place as much as we do, so rather than leave no trace, please
leave it better for the locals and visitors that will follow in your footsteps.
Throughout the beautiful Buller / Kawatiri District freedom camping areas like this one are provided to assist in
the preservation of our stunning coast and inland forest areas. Please use these sites and their facilities to
protect the environment for those who live here, our visitors, and future generations to come.
You can do your part to help keep this place beautiful by:
Keeping your stay to a maximum of 2 nights
Using the toilets provided
Not washing directly in the river. Please collect water and dispose of it in your vehicle waste system
Only staying overnight in the designated area, as shown on the map
Respecting those you share the site with. Please keep noise to a minimum, and your gear well
contained.
Keeping access ways clear for other users
Calling 111 in the event of a fire. Open fires are prohibited at this site.
Rubbish bins for disposal are available in Punakaiki, Westport, Hector, Karamea and Reefton. If the
bins are full, please take your rubbish elsewhere as the local birdlife love to spread bags of rubbish
around.
Dump stations are available on The Esplanade in Westport, The Strand in Reefton and at the Cobden
Bridge in Greymouth.

Great town with friendly vibes.
Good place to stay right in town and next to the river. River was quite high because of all the rain.

A smallish area by the river, quite popular.
Clean flush toilets and dump station close at the entrance. A great area for walking and bikers. A very friendly welcoming town. The car park at the Reefton hotel across the road will take an overflow of campervans in return for a meal and a drink. I will add that the meals are large and generous. Highly recommended.

Good spot to stop for the night and the most quaint town.
Right near the river, nice toilets and a place to put your rubbish. Stopped at the pub and had a chat to the locals and had a great night!

Nice spot next to the river.
Sheltered. Toilets were flushing and not stinky as heard in previous reviews. Dump station located close to entrance to site. None of reefton has drinkable water without boiling so make sure your fresh water is stocked up before visiting.

Reefton is a very welcoming town to freedom campers.
Clear signage which made it obvious what to do / where to park for newbies to freedom camping. Nearby public toilets (very clean and flushing) dump station and water (but not drinking water due to water work problems). Right by quite a big river which was a really lovely sound to wake up to in the morning.

This was another super spot by a river.
Clean toilets, water, dump station and access to washing machines. A walk through the wee town was well worth it. Had a visit from a friendly camp warden.

Not many places to park..
Maybe 5 or 6 motorhomes though there were a couple in tents as well.
Dump station close by.
Immaculate public toilets.
You are beside the river with a couple of pubs and cafes within 100 metres

Very quaint campsite, not many parking spaces so will need to negotiate with your neighbours as vehicles can’t use the day parking on the other side.
Clean toilets, quite a few sandflies by the lake

Excellent free camp site for csc.
Toilets closed in winter. Right next to the river and park. Dogs allowed ( well no sign saying no dogs ) so our fur babies loved it. 1 minate walk to great pubs and fab cafe up the road.

Cleanest public toilets we have ever used in Australia and New Zealand.
Thank you Reefton community. Pleasant outlook, birds chirping and open space with river and park in front.
