Two Places, Two Completely Different Trips
Sea kayaking in NZ is as much about what's around you as the paddling itself. The Abel Tasman is the classic - golden sand beaches, seals, a sheltered coastline and enough variety to keep things interesting all day. My pick for a guided day out is the Classic Marine Reserve run, ideally on a king tide around midday when you can sneak into places like the Tonga Arches and Shag Harbour. Departing from Kaiteriteri beats Marahau if you want more coastline in your day. The sweet spot timing-wise is mid-March to mid-May when the sea is calmer and the seal pups have grown up a bit. Don't Sleep on Okarito
Okarito on the West Coast is one I'd rate just as highly, just for completely different reasons. It's a lagoon paddle rather than open coast - shallow, mirror-calm water, no motor boats, and NZ's largest pest-free habitat surrounding you. Kotuku, kaka, you name it. Early morning in there is something else when the reflections are going. The whole thing is very safe as you rarely leave the lagoon, and the operation has deliberately stayed small to keep the experience genuine. A guided kayak at Okarito is one of the more quietly special things you can do on the West Coast.
Seals and Sounds
Kaikoura is the other standout. Kayaking with seals in Kaikoura puts you at water level with them, which is where they actually want to interact - being on land watching them is a pale version of this.
