Okarito Kayaks offers expert, intimate and nature focused guided kayak trips, as well as rental of kayaks to explore independently, on Ōkārito Lagoon, New Zealand’s largest unmodified coastal wetland.
We’re a small, award-winning family-run business, that offer a genuinely quiet, peaceful and off-the-beaten track experience.

A beautiful experience - kayaking through the peaceful lagoon, enjoying good views of the waterfowl and then, the best part - going along a small channel into the rainforest, full of birdsong and stunning
trees and plants.
Highly recommended for all nature friends !

Hired a double kayak for 4 hours (1/2 day).
The staff at Okarito Nature Tours were incredible friendly, making sure we knew what we were doing and felt comfortable out on the water. We had a great morning paddling around the lagoon seeing herons, shags, kingfishers, and an Australasian bittern. We had plenty of time to paddle all three of the marked trails, birdwatching along the way. Would definitely recommend getting out on the water early though as the wind definitely picked up in the afternoon and made the paddle home a bit harder. The free coffee/tea back at the office afterwards was a great touch!

Great fun, stunning views of the Southern Alps, visited during mid November so plenty to wading birds still about!
Great fishing spot.

This is a cruise around the lagoon rather than seeing the breeding ground.
Its a bit cheaper and you see plenty of Kotuku/white herons. We were the only people on the boat-great.

Pay to hire kayaks for 1/2 day.
Paddle through tranquil lagoons or go at night on the Kiwi spotting adventure. Saw my first kiwi in the wild!
