NZ's scenic attractions have a way of making you feel genuinely small. Standing at Mt Cook, I remember thinking I had no idea mountains could be that steep or that imposing. And then the same valley at night, with more stars than you knew existed. Day and night, the show is open, and both versions hit differently. Lake Tekapo has that insane glacial colour that you have to see from height to fully appreciate, and the Church of the Good Shepherd gets swamped by tour buses, so sunrise or sunset is your move. If you want to go deeper into the night sky, the Mt John observatory tours are the real deal.
One thing that comes up again and again with NZ's most spectacular spots is the tour bus problem. The West Coast mirror lake, the Hokitika Gorge, Pancake Rocks, even Tunnel Beach down in Coastal Otago - they all get hammered mid-morning. The campervan advantage is real here. Get up at sparrows fart and you'll have these places nearly to yourself. It's the single best piece of advice I can give. Over in Wanaka, the algorithm has taken over a bit and some spots like the famous lone tree are honestly not worth the fuss, but the lake views along the Hawea road are genuinely great and cost nothing but five minutes of your time.
Some of the best scenic stuff in NZ rewards a small effort. Te Waikoropupu Springs in Golden Bay has water clarity that is genuinely in the top five on earth - and it's not hard to get to. The Oparara Arch out of Karamea is a bit of a mission on a rough road, but if that kind of thing doesn't put you off, you're probably exactly the person who'll love what's at the end of it.
