Campervan day parking in NZ is one of those things you figure out fast or it costs you time and stress. Town centres are often the worst offenders for tight, awkward parking that's clearly designed for small cars. The move is to find the spots that actually work for your rig - foreshore roads, back-of-town areas, and designated carparks with real space. In Wanaka, for example, I'd stick to Ardmore St along the foreshore rather than fighting the town centre, and stroll in from there. Same logic applies most places.
A Few Spots Worth Knowing
In Queenstown, Boundary Street Carpark is the go-to - around 75 dedicated campervan spaces, which is rare for a busy tourist town. Up at Mt Cook, White Horse Hill Carpark is actually the overnight hub for campervans, meaning you can be first on the trail in the morning while everyone else drives in. In Fiordland, if you're heading to the Milford Sound cruises, there's free parking on Deepwater Basin Road - budget an extra 25 minutes of walking though. The Nelson region has good campervan-friendly stops too, including Takaka's back streets near the playground, and Toad Hall just into town.
On the Road Between
The bigger lesson is just to think a step ahead. Tight carparks on busy routes - like the Fantail Falls stop on the West Coast - can be a squeeze if you arrive late. The pull-off spots along the Milford Road after Pop's View are a different story: wide, easy, and worth stopping at properly.
