South Island ▷ Nelson Region ▷
Motueka is less a destination and more a vital waypoint. It sits right on the doorstep of Abel Tasman and Golden Bay, and honestly, its most important job is making sure you're well-stocked before you head in. If you didn't catch Connings Food Market on the way through, the supermarket here is your last decent option before prices get thinner and choices get fewer. Toad Hall at the entrance to town is worth a stop too - solid food variety, easy campervan parking, and a kids play area if you've got little ones in tow.
The town itself is a funny mix - hippie meets bogan, and somehow it works. Just out of town, the Riwaka Resurgence is a proper little detour. The water comes out of the hillside crystal clear and ice cold, and there's a sacred pool at the outlet that's Wahi Tapu, but the Crystal Pool further up will absolutely test your nerve for a plunge. Also worth knowing: Kina Beach a little south of town is a laid-back camping spot, and the golf course nearby does surprisingly good views for not much money. And if you're thinking about jumping out of a plane, skydiving here over the Abel Tasman coastline is one of the better skydive backdrops in the country - the RANKERS promo code gets you a discount if that's on the cards.
