Big, quiet carpark next to a library and three different toilets, one of which stays open 24h.
Two 24h showers as well but didn't try and at least one was broken

Nice free camping, many places, toilets clean, cold shower (free) and hot shower (3$ for 5 minutes), calm, nature on one side and the town on the other side, close from shops and a laundromat

Fine for a stopover to better places, given the lack of local alternatives.
Site currently gravel, next to some building works. Was initially concerned as seemed to attract the local uni-brows for a spot of early evening powersliding and urinating one metre away from our van. But, actually turned out to be a quiet night in the end. Didn't feel especially relaxed at any point, we moved on first thing and had breakfast at Paihia.

Grassy clearing in a car park.
Sign says limit of 4 campers, we arrived as the 4th camper at 1830 local, when we woke up there were 8 vans so the limit gets ignored.
Quiet night no problems, good stop over for a night.

Nice quiet car park with toilets.
More camper stayed there than the allowed 4. Was no problem just a little loud at times. Good free spot.

Basic camp site, good for one night stay.
Right next to the famous toilet in the town centre.

Simple site, there was a construction going next to it so it was a bit bare.
The hundertwasser toilets are worth it though.

Nice trees and shady spots.
Only 4 spots but in the end there were 10 vans. A bit noisier than other sites due to its location on town. Toilet was ok but only the one for handicapped was open.

Decent free spot to stay on the way up North, not exactly scenic but convenient for Paihia and Waitangi.
Large gravel carpark set behind buildings in the middle of a small town with clean, flushing famous toilets. Quiet at night.

Good overnight spot with clean toilets open through the night and the famous Hundertwasser toilets open at 7am.
It is a trucker stop though so some noise through the night. Didn't bother us though.

The previously designated are is now a construction site - the Kawakawa Hundertwasser Park being built.
Freedom camping still allowed and possible, just not the most pleasant for the time being.

It’s currently under construction so the grassy bit isn’t accessible.
The site itself is alright, toilets are about 50m away but water from the toilets are heavily chlorinated so wouldn’t drink it.

The Toilets have vanished, pulled down perhaps ?, the freedom space is a construction site.
Should have just stayed in Paihia Car Park.

Kinda noisy.
The do party’s on the weekends so kinda loud at night. Also a lot of lights. Locals just came to our Van, they were nice at first but actually came for money.
Didn’t really feel that safe.

We felt a bit observed by locals.
They noted all register numbers several times during evening. I did not feel very save, quite busy car park at night. We had rain, so car park was muddy. No showers, but toilets nice during the day (Hundertwasser toilets!), a night simple toilets at car park.

Nice place for a free night!
I personally think it should be more places like this. It doesn't have to be more than a toilet in my opinion. As a poor backpacker I recommend this place.

Only a toilet, nothing else.
There were 6 cars all together that night on that place. Little noisy, because its just behind the main street of Kawakawa. However, good for one night for free.

We camped in the car park behind the amazing Hundertwasser toilets with some trepidation.
It looked like it was going to be a hooning spot later in the night, judging by the skid marks. But, we had a very quiet, peaceful night, and our fears were unfounded. Toilet access right next to the carpark (in addition to the Hundertwasser toilets which we think are closed at night) Ok for a free spot.
