Eastwoodhill Arboretum

Regarded as the most comprehensive collection of Northern Hemisphere trees south of the equator.

Eastwoodhill is the National Arboretum of New Zealand. It was founded in 1910 by Douglas Cook. It encompasses 131 hectares of exotic and native trees, shrubs and climber plantings.
Our mission is to develop and exhibit a collection of diverse plant species that contributes to the conservation of global diversity and creates a unique environment for the appreciation of life.

Through partnerships with research institutions and a unique geographic location, we serve as an arboreal ark, a safe haven for threatened trees and an inspiring place for research and education.

You can feel the thought, heart and care from many generations that has gone into Eastwoodhill when you wander within its grounds.

- Guided tours, dinners, events, meetings and conferences.
- 25km of tracks, 15,000 trees/shrubs, some rare species.
- Accommodation, catering, children's activities.
- POP stop and overnight stay for self contained campervans available.

We went out for a guided curator's tour and it was incredible!

We got to learn so much about why and how the area was planted and to see the vision for the future. Highly recommend getting the guided tour and stopping at the cafe and gift shop to pick up a treat.

Lovely walk during a sunny day.

Lots of mature and exotic trees. Nice lookout.

Even if you don't particularly like trees, Eastwoodhill Arboretum is one of NZ's hidden treasures.

So much thought and effort has been put into this place. And it shows.

Pleasant stop off if you are passing, not sure I would go a long way out of the way to visit this.

It is a long way off the beaten track. Strange also to be visiting a collection from the Northern hemisphere, having just come from the Northern hemisphere. Still a very pleasant walk in the woods. Visitor centre was excellent and you there is overnight accomodation available as well. The huge ball of marble suspended by water pressure was fascinating.
