Camp amongst the seals!

Be careful when walking around as what you thought may be a rock could actually be a snoozing seal and they are pretty aggressive if you get between them and the sea. The thought of being so close to nature might wear a little thin after a while as the smell of the seals start to infiltrate every pore of your body......

An awesome place to have a picnic though, very unique and beautiful.

  • The only free place around Kaikoura.

Great location just in front of the ocean. Super big area where you can just pull off and choose your place. there were a lot of vans but always easy to find a spot. Toilet was not very clean but does the job! Totally recommend this place!

  • Great spot, space for more than 20 vehicles.

But toilets were disgusting and smelly.

  • Easy to find.

Seals were cool in the morning but scary at night. Had a fantastic sunrise here.

  • Stayed there on the night of Sunday 13th November 2016 and decided to stay the night, along with 4 other Camper Vans.

    A beautiful place.

Awoken at 00:02h on the morning of Monday 14th November 2016 by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake !!!!!

Road completely broken up in several places, and two massive landslides either side of this ideallic spot meant that we had to abandon our vehicles and we had to be rescued by helicopter.

This spot likely to be unreachable until early 2017, but when it is, head there.

As a point of note, subsequent to the earthquake, the sea bed is now 2 meters higher than it was on Sunday 13th November 🙀🙀

I will return one day (from the UK) ....... the most memorable of experiences !!

  • wonderful place with the seals so close by!

Self-contained only, and no facilities around. You see seals that are alive and if you look around you also see some bones and furs from seals not so alive... but sitting there on the rocks with a beer in your hand in the evening watching the seals and waking up to the beautiful sunrise makes up for it. one of my favorite freedom camping spots on our trip.

  • Free scenic and self contained only (no facilities).

Not well signposted as a 'freedom campsite' but since you're reading this you know it is :)

Very exposed and quite windy the night we were here, but great location, ON the beach and seals very close and rather tame too.

  • Great scenery, with falls and the sea.

Killer sunrise. Watch out for the flies and the seals. No toilets.

  • Beautiful and exposed location by the sea.

Fur seals around. Nobody else there. It's signposted as a picnic spot but freedom camping is not forbidden.

  • An exposed but unique place to free camp for the night.

We awoke the next morning to find a seal sleeping close to the back of our vans. Our kids thought it was a real adventure. It is also very close to the seal waterfall walk, which was helpful as we could get there before the crowds and buses arrived.

  • Freedom camping at its best!

Seals all around incredible seascape and a sunrise that was breath taking. Some road noise but minimal. No signs to say can or can't camp, woke up to find a policeman peering at the camper. We were self contained so after a wave he drove off.

  • Gravel area right on seafront straight off main road but traffic not a problem and never hear the train either.

Saw seals on rocks and fab sunset.

  • Free, scenic, heaps of lazy seals.

Enroute to photograph the sunrise, I almost stood on a sleeping seal, they really DO look like rocks! As with all stops along this coast, you will get trucks and trains rolling by during night, but noise of crashing waves mostly cancels this out.

  • Great spot, 10 metres from the water - seals 10 metres away - not too busy.
