Great spot for chilling out and using as a base

We camped further up the coast and watched the surfers and sunset.

Multiple fire pits have been made and there is plenty of driftwood around for a great evening fire. My favourite free site so far!

Abundant space and an incredible view.

Stayed for one night, and everyone gets their own table as there aren't many cars. The town is quite quiet; met a few people in the morning. Dump stations are acceptable, but there's no running water here. Only the emergency dump station had some, but it's recommended for necessary use only, as it collects and stores rainwater. The sunset is truly spectacular.

Absolute beautiful spot but number of places very limited (5 I think).

Toilets not very welcoming but don’t care.

Can be quite windy. Very close to cape palliser and otaries.

Amazing free campsite with view on the ocean.

There are two dry toilets and dump station. There are two small bistros where you can take lunch or coffee. Place is very calm and peaceful.✌️

Love, love, LOVE Ngawi, and what a lovely freedom camp!

Filled up very quickly the time we were there, so get in early and be conscious of others around you. Beautiful views. Easy access to Cape Palliser lighthouse, loads of bins and toilets too! Thanks Ngawi! Fandabbydozy! FB: Tasman Travels

When we arrived in m Ngawi the camping area was rammed so we stayed down the road past the golf course as many others had.

We had a fantastic spot with great views of the Kaikouras. We had fish and chips from Captains Table. Really fresh gurnard and great serving size. Worth a trip to the lighthouse and stop to see the seals.

    Wow what a magic spot.

Especially when the weather is good, which it was. Gr8 fishing and diving...'apparently'.

    Really friendly locals.

Really nice site right on the beach.

Toilets are only portaloos but they’re clean. The road in is a bit dodgy but it’s cool.

The pinicles are defo worth visiting either on the way in or out

    Amazing.

Beautiful, by the sea in a wee village. Can stay for 21 days. Clean drop toilet, fish and chip/coffee/ice cream van adjacent. Lots of recycling bin. Dump station across the road (but it asks only to use in emergency due to rural location they need costly truck to empty it). Definitely recommend

Nice spot by the rocky shore, with the odd seal.

Great food truck open on weekends. Look out for seals basking on the rocks on the short trip to the lighthouse. Large area to park overnight- further from the food truck if you want to avoid daytrippers picnicking. Clean toilets, recycling and rubbish bins available. Donate to iron maiden for upkeep of area.👍🏽

    Fantastic place at the beach.

Toilets and recycling bins are available, also a dump-station at the other side of the street and stunning sundowns! No water, no swimming possible, but nevertheless worth staying at least 1 night! 10 minutes to cape Palliser and the seals colony.

We arrived at the wrong time of year for the weather, but we liked this place anyhow just for the amount of seals in the near.

For a real wild seal experience, this cannot be beaten. Take a drive up to the lighthouse and see them all relaxing on the grass and coastline. A lot of space on a grassy and gravel area. Drop toilets were the cleanest we’ve experience and many bins for waste and separate recycling.

Fantastic spot right by the ocean.

A few bitey bugs but they seemed to go away after dusk. There's was a couple of little food trucks there we had lunch at. Great to wake up to the sound of waves and catch the seals down by the rocks in the morning. No water supply but really well kept drop loos and bins.

    I loved this spot!

Beautiful, with a view to the South Island and gorgeous sunsets. Very quiet although the area was quite busy with freedom campers. Bring your own food, the shop was closed when we stayed - no local fish n chips for us unfortunately!
