Information

Aparima Bridge Reserve

Camping is allowed for up to 28 days at the Aparima Bridge Reserve in Thornbury, Southland. Thornbury is a small settlement about 10 minutes north of Riverton off SH99, follow the Thornbury Gropers Bush road until you see the BIG blue sign just before the bridge.

This is a large grassy area surrounded by large trees, and is accessible from both sides of the road. Large vehicles will not be able to fit underneath the bridge.

Freedom campers are asked to use the toilet facilities provided, dispose of their waste and rubbish in the appropriate manner and respect the environment around them and other users of it. Cheers to the Southland District Council for the free-camping goodness!

    A nice location.

However...beware of vehicles on the grass during or after bad weather! Car was bogged and needed towing out with a tractor. The kind farmer apparently had to pull someone else out the day before also. The site is good just probably best during nice weather.

Under the bridge, close to the road, no toilets.

Easy to find, could be messy in winter.

Close to Invercargill. Free of course and for 28 days. River is close to swin.
