Information

Alex McKenzie Arboretum, Otautau

The intrepid Southland explorer can camp for up to four nights at the Alex McKenzie Arboretum & picnic area just outside Otautau.

This place is a magic find, there are great grassy areas underneath a huge range of mature trees. Picnic tables are scattered around the area and a neat set of toilets across the little creek.

The Southland District Council have sorted this freedom camping out for the travelling community - repay the favour by obeying all signage, respecting the area and other users of it, and leaving your site tidy when you go.

When we arrived we not sure if you can standing here for the night.

It is possible, also in the grass en there is enough space. It's very nice, still and there is a beautiful nature. The toilet are very clean, it's nice to have a flush toilet. We loved this place!

    Lovely site!

Mature trees since it's an arboretum. Park-like setting with picnic tables. Cross either of two bridges and find running water, flush toilets and even toilet paper!

Donations accepted. $5 suggested and we were happy to double that.

WOW what a fantastic "FREE" Campsite.

Nice clean toilet facilities, good drinking water and absolutely beautifull. Even though you were literally right off the main road into Otautau it felt like we were off the radar as we had no service. Was awesome. Will definitly stay again

Lots of shade, grassy areas, creeks, and lots of flowers and areas to walk around in! You CAN camp there in a tent, no signs saying otherwise and there are toilets for those non self contained! Def recommend staying here!!
