Information

Lake Middleton Campsite

Use this campsite as a base to walk or mountain bike in the Lake Ōhau area or in Ruataniwha Conservation Park.

The Waitaki District Council looks after this campsite and for a small fee you can experience the goodness. Please register and pay on arrival - information is on the registration booths.

This campsite is situated on the shores of Lake Middleton, which is next to Lake Ohau. Camp in among the mature douglas fir trees, feels a bit Canadian really. This is a good place for fishing, walking and mountain biking.

DOC Campsite Pricing

Beautiful landscape and only one street separates it from Lake Ohau.

I went in the middle of January and there were few people. Good for fishing, water sports, kayaking. Calm and silent camping. Good and cleaned toilet. Sandflly wasn’t an issue! I just didn't give it 10 because I like to feel far from civilization while camping and there are some houses nearby.

I arrived in the dark and was quite confused about where exactly the campground was as the sign/info is just on a pullover on the road.

I went and camped by lake m, not totally sure if was supposed to! Next morning I realized there was a wee area on the lake ohau side of the road that appeared to have toilets also. Toilets on lake m side were locked. No water tap. Overall nice place to stay just 20-30min off from the main highway.

    Lovely doc site.

Toilets clean. Very popular with locals so need to get there early to get a good spot.

    Gorgeous place to stay.

Clean toilets. Lake is stunning. What a place to wake up to. Sadly, no fish. I'll just keep practicing casting and maybe one day I'll get one.

We spent one great night in that site, enjoying swimming in the lake and wild birds while a strong wind was sweeping Ohau lake.

Just take care of the sandflies at dusk.

Beautiful secluded spot, great place for the family with Lake Middleton very good for swimming, clean toilets & recycling bins for the rubbish.

Great value for the $24 for a family of 4 each night, ended up staying 5 nights we enjoyed it so much. Will come again.

Quite pricy when compared to the DOC sites.

When we were there in November 2014 we were the only ones and could not find the toilets at first (it was quite hidden in the trees). Scenery is beautiful. Campsite itself could be better maintained, it was quite muddy and there is quite some inclination on the terrain

    We loved staying here.

Apart from the toilets and water tap you have to be self suffcient. A sign says to boil the water but my son accidently drank it and he didn't get sick. We swam in the lake and we could hear a gale blowing up Lake Ohau but we were completely sheltered where we were. It was great being able to walk over the road to the other lake for a different view. We would stay here again.
