Whakapapa Holiday Park in the winter - primo!

Information

In the heart of Tongariro National Park, designated a dual World Heritage area for its very important Maori cultural and spiritual associations as well as the outstanding features and history of the volcanic landscape.

Campervan sites and cabins are sheltered amongst the beautiful, native beech trees of the Tongariro National Park. A 32 bed lodge and several tent sites are also available, all bookable online.

Many lovely walking tracks are nearby, starting within the village. Enjoy the Taranaki waterfall, Whakapapa river, mountain views and stunning volcanic features of the land.

The Tongariro Crossing, the world-famous 1 day hike, is just a short shuttle ride away.

Whakapapa ski field is only 6 kms further up the road, arguably one of New Zealand’s best ski fields.

If that’s not enough for you, then take advantage of the mountain biking, river rafting, trout fishing, canoeing and other outdoor activities nearby.

Very welcoming site, with helpful, friendly management. Great location among the trees, and a good shuttle for the Alpine Crossing. Free wifi, showers, hair dryers. Large kitchen and good laundry facilities. Several walks directly from site.

Wonderful place to stay, all campsites are separated for privacy, ideal for hiking, large kitchen, washer/dryer sometimes in use without pause, showers/toilets good. Spent there 2 nights. Very friendly staff. Interesting I-site, worth visiting!

I stayed before and after hiking the Tongariro Northern Circuit. I left my bags for free during the 4 day hike, and the shop had enough to add things I didn’t bring with me. I got a backpacker bed in the lodge for $28 a night, and had the whole room to myself one of the days. On weekends the place fills up so make sure to book ahead. There is a kitchen with all equipment needed, shuttles are easy to access, and a food truck with burgers, icecream, and coffee sets up outside.

Perfect location for exploring the National Park and the Taranaki Falls Track. The site is well maintained and had plentiful hot water in the showers. We had a powered site - the pitches were nicely segregated from each other but very small - not sure I’d want to stay here too many nights.

Really nice place!! Perfect for staying after climbing Tongariro. Great clean hot shower with plenty of space, no limit of hot water. Fully equiped kitchen with nice area to eat and chat. Free wifi and very big areas for vans. Also a convenient store where to buy staff. Laundry machine there perfect for cleaning after excursions! Its a bit of money but worthy after long day at Tongariro...better do reservation, as it was fully booked the night we stayed!

Don’t listen to bad reviews, this place is fabulous. They even have a bath in the ladies washroom. Lots of toilets and showers very clean. Big camp kitchen with everything you need. Nice spots to park, very private. Well set out campground with great walks everywhere. Helpful hosts.
Not cheap but worth it. $46 for 2 per night motor home.

Camper spots were tucked away slightly in some foliage, good separation between the other vans and campers. Great kitchen with dishes and pots/pans/cutlery available. Host was great!

The place is beautiful but the overall impretion is disapointing, all public facilities (WC, showers, kitchen) are dirty and smelly. And above all there is a polotical statment on the reception wall that made us feel very un-comfortable and un-wanted.

The kitchen is fantastic. Unfortunately the camping options are quite limited if you want to pitch a tent - you have the choice of a small patch under a bright streetlamp, or a gravel area which will damage tents and does not accept pegs. It's a shame, because otherwise this would be a great campsite.

Best campground we had on our journey. Nice spots in the woods with good walks nearby. Lots of clean facilities (big kitchen and hot showers). Drive to the city where our Crossing Shuttle took off was about 15 minutes. There is also a shuttle that picks you up at the campground. Amazing view of the stars at night. Fully recommended!
