Ngaherenga Camping Ground

Information

Ngaherenga Campsite

Camp near a stream beside lush forest and look out for native wildlife such as kākā, kōkako, kākāriki and short-tailed bats.

The Ngaherenga Camping Ground is situated right next to the Pureora Field Base and is surrounded by beautiful, lush native forest. A good place for nature lovers especially bird people - listen out for the fully endangered kokako.

There are 6 BBQ tables each with its own BBQ/fireplace, 5 of them are set in an alcove where a tent or caravan/motor home could park in.

DOC Campsite Pricing

Ngaherenga Campsite is categorised as a DOC Standard Campsite. The following pricing indicates usual pricing. Prices vary for some campsites and may include seasonal pricing. Visit the DOC website for exact pricing.

Untreated water should be boiled before use to ensure it's safe. Wood BBQs and fireplaces, cold showers, picnic tables, a cooking shelter and rubbish bins may be provided; this will vary from site to site.

Overall this was a nice spot with a mix of a big open spaces and smaller secluded areas.

Only 1 toilet though and it wasn't very clean. There's a gravel track off the main road to get there but it's an easy drive.

Can't comment a lot on the area or nearby tracks cos I got there fairly late and it was pouring down until I left the next morning. Seemed really nice though. I would have loved to come on a warm, sunny day instead.

Nice spacious tenting spot with a great forest tower nearby to climb up, but dirty toilet and woke up in the middle of the night to loud gunshots very very close by.

Everything else was really nice, the mosquitoes were a pain after dark but manageable, but the shooting was quite alarming! I contacted DOC about it and they said there’s not much they can do. So beware of illegal night hunters or whatever they were doing!

This place is nice the long drops fairly tidy but watch out for mosquitoes around here 😂 bug spray is a must.

Beautiful drive from Hamilton to this camp ground.a good cheap site at 8 bux a person and just simply paid online.

Get a good private spot with one of the braziers so you can light a fire 🔥

Would stay again for a couple of nights only stayed one night this first time.

Great DOC campsite at the start of the Timber Trail.

No cell phone reception so make your shuttle arrangements in Benneydale! Big grassy area, long drop, water, BBQ pit in some areas. Very quiet, just lovely bird song to listen to.

Spacious campsite surrounded by beautiful forest.

We had kakas swooping overhead early evening! Several sites had picnic tables and fireplaces. There was a rubbish bin and tap water was available. The campsite is just down the road from the start of the Timber Trail which we cycled with the use of local shuttles. There are also some great walking tracks nearby. There was only one other camper here when we stayed in April.

The best campsite during our trip: wild, full of birds, nice wood BBQ.

This is an isolated campsite just a few kilometers off the main road into Pureora Forest.

There is ample parking for cars and campervans on the small rolling hills that create privacy for everyone. There is one clean drop toilet, one treated drinkable tap, and 6 fire pits with grates and iron plates to cook over. The BBQs referenced are not gas, so make sure to have plenty of firewood. There is a surplus of kindling around the site, but it was too wet to make a fire when we visited. There are lots of surrounding hiking and cycling trails, and this site is part of the Timber Trail. Honesty box of $6 per person per night. Stayed one night in June 2015.

Really beautiful DOC campsite in the countryside!

Short gravel road, but feels like in the middle of nowhere! Big grassy area with 6 BBQ places and picnic benches! Fresh Water supply and one Basic toilet in a good condition! So far the best campsite on the north island!

The best here is the bird population, the sounds and birds you see are amazing!

The worst for us was that we were eaten by mosquitos at night! Dozens of them got inside our car, that was not nice! Basic facilities, longdrop available and water supply. There is a public (flushable) toilet but it isn't walkable if you really want to go!..

    Just 6$ p.p. unpowered (January 2015)

Great camping ground for the money.

We used the "bottom" camp area with the "long drop" toilet. The bird population in this area is incredible. The hospitality of the local people has to be experienced. It is a "Must do again" place to stay.

Very well maintained site adjacent to forest and with pleasant views over countryside.

Tables and fireplaces available on many pitches. Excellent flush toilets on main site, long drop on other. Litter bins available. A credit to DOC and the staff involved. 6NZD per person, no power.
