Broken Hills Campsite

The Broken Hills Campsite is located beside the Tairua River among native bush. This is a standard campsite in the Coromandel region.

Great camping next to the Tairua River and a chance to explore the gold mining area - who needs lotto when there's gold to be found!
NOTE - If you have the DOC Conservation Campsite Pass, this is one of the two applicable campsites to incur an extra $5 surcharge

DOC Campsite Pricing

Broken Hills Campsite is categorised as a DOC Standard Campsite. The following pricing indicates usual pricing. Prices vary for some campsites and may include seasonal pricing. Visit the DOC website for exact pricing.

Untreated water should be boiled before use to ensure it's safe. Wood BBQs and fireplaces, cold showers, picnic tables, a cooking shelter and rubbish bins may be provided; this will vary from site to site.

Awesome spot to stay, toilets were kept clean and beautiful streams and walks around the site to explore.

We went and walked up to the gold mines at night (only do this if you want to feel like you’re in a horror movie!)

Very basic campsite, we were the only ones there so felt a bit eerie.

Basic facilities and water really needs to be treated or boiled, came out brown when we first ran the tap. Plenty of space and I reckon during summer it’s nice- follow @milly0nthem0ve on IG/YT for all things travel!

This campsite cannot be accessed as the road to get there, SH25A, is closed from both ends.

Very nice DOC campsite tucked away up in the hills.

Heaps of space. Several toilets scattered around. Workers were installing picnic tables in a small shelter when we were there. Lovely river. Out of season there seems to be no reason to book as there are still envelopes to put your money in and a slot to deposit it. No mention anywhere about a $5 surcharge if you have a ‘campsite pass’. A great base to explore the old mine workings and tunnel.

Nice and quiet in the native trees.

Bit of a drive along the gravel road to get in but nothing crazy. Just a toilet and small shelter, no benches or anything though.

    Lovely camp ground.

Very big with heaps of secluded camping areas, hidden away. Drop toilets in each of the different areas. Free with Camp Pass. Very well kept. Would have loved to stayed longer and do some of the walks, but we were limited with time.

A quiet, clean campsite with good bathroom facilities and a fresh river to swim in on warm afternoons.

No cooking facilities, but we enjoyed our stay here a lot!

Shared the large campground with only one other van in late November, gorgeous river views - good for swimming, easily accessible and lots of toilets (drop) around the grounds - bring your own toilet paper

Kind of expensive for the services provided. The road to get there is in very good condition.

    Stayed there one night.

The drive is via sealed and gravel road although doable with a campervan. We reached pretty late afternoon so didn’t have time to look around. The camp site was just fine and the toilets were not inviting. Lots of flies along the walls and not a feeling of a clean place.

Unfortunately it rained hard the following morning so we left pretty quickly.

Does not live up to experience with other DOC scenic camps as location stuck in valley and mostly between trees. Gets dark pretty quickly at night because of this.

    This is definitely not scenic!

They may call it scenic as you have to drive 5k from the main road to get to it.

Overpriced for a patch of grass to pitch a tent as most of the 'scenic' sites are! It should be $6-8 p.p. and not $13. Just money grabbing... It should be based on what facilities or amenities the site has, not just because its surrounded by trees.

This site is accessed through a gate which you need to open and close behind you. There is a basic drop toilet and a non treated water supply. No shelter or picnic benches which even a lot of the free sites have.

Positives - it was quiet and wasn't overcrowded like many sites are. Also fairly decent to see the stars as there was no bright lights around to interfere.

(1 point for having a toilet, 1 point for having water, 1 point for being quiet and 1 point for not being crowded).

Nice quiet spot, set alongside a river.

There was only 2 other people camping there when we stopped in for the night in late November. No fires allowed. Gravel road to get in but fine for campervans.

Well maintained excellent DOC camping ground with basic facilities(long drop toilets & taps).

Very private with lots of sites in amongst native bush. Runs along side the Tairua River which is very picturesque too. Some excellent walks in the area. Be careful to get road name correct as there is another road into Broken Hills with the same name just missing the "valley" out of it. Bird life is fantastic.
