Thicket Burn Campsite
This is a basic campsite in southern Fiordland. On the edge of the park 5 km from Lake Hauroko, New Zealand’s deepest lake. Fish, swim, or tramp nearby.
Just 5km's from New Zealand's deepest lake. This campsite is a bit off the beaten track and it's quite a long drive along a gravel road to get there. Once there though, its beautiful, and its free! Turn off at the small town of Clifden, well sign posted.

DOC Basic Campsite
Basic campsites have very limited facilities so you need to be fully self-sufficient. There are basic toilets and water may be from a water tank that is untreated, stream or lake. Untreated water should be boiled before use to ensure it's safe. Access may be by road or boat.

Lovely field to camp in, toilets and bbq sites/ picnic tables.
Docked points because so many sandflies throughout the day/ night. Couldn’t be outside the van even with long clothes on and bug spray. Down a long gravel road and easy to find.

Really nice campsite with toilet and raining water, good place to explore with kids - trails, fishing or boating - however, motor boat is safer than free boating because lake conditions changes suddenly
. Campsite is 6km to the lake.

Quite a drive down a gravel road.
Campsite not the most scenic but perfect for star gazing and feels a long way from civilization. Pure peace and tranquility.
Has a drop hole, like any drop hole it's not the most pleasant!
No running water.

Awesome camp.
Peaceful. Larger flat camping area. A few mossies but they live there so can't complain about them. Good clean toilets. Thanks for having us DOC and mossies.

Very nice campsite, about 6 kms from beautiful lake setting and walks.
Campsite is set just on the boundary of the national park forest and farmland. Excellent flat park like setting, good toilet, fire sites and access to surrounding forest. No Sandflies and sunny spot. There are also a few spots right down at the lake you could also camp ( not officially marked out by doc), however they wouldn't be as private and the flies by the lake where on task plus lacking in sun. There are also a number of abandoned doc sites along small connecting dirt road about 2 km from lake ( the only other road), very overgrown and in total shade so less desirable. So We found best option was to camp at this great campsite and then make the small journey to the lake and other adventures. Worth the stop if in the area.

Follow signs to Lake Hauroko, it was really pretty down by the lake (car park) but there was hundreds of flies/mossies so we didn't want to be outside and we had to leave really early in the morning because
they'd all got in the car. Nice spot but be prepared.

Free campsite, clean and new toilet, water available, 2 tables, big place for parking and nearby the lake and the beautiful track.
Go up in the mountain to get the 360 view which is amazing. Not an easy track, 3 hours return at least and it goes up very steeply. But worth it! Be aware of sand flies, especially near the lake!

Incredibly peaceful place.
The lake during the sunset is really quiet. Take the three hour track to the lookout. You will enjoy the view from up there. Hard/medium track.

A beautiful open air site surrounded by dense bush.
Lush green grass, great toilet, plenty of room. You can light a fire. No sand flies, that's really important. This is a beautiful spot.

Much more sandfly-safe than near the lake.

Ppen space field area with some boundary trees, toilet block and few picnic benches.
Country side views of farm land and some hills. No views of lake from this campsite. Flat ground site some sheltered trees. If you drive 6km from campsite you will find yourself at the lake entrance from this side. Remote location away from crowd very quite large site. Only one other camper on this site when we were here

After you have driven a 20km gravel road, the view of lake is magnificent.
Sandflies are terrible. Picnic tables available.
