Wooded Gully - Mt Thomas Forest

Information

Wooded Gully Campsite

Camp beside a stream below tracks leading to Mt Thomas.

A huge grassy area with amazing views over the Canterbury Plains. You can also camp in smaller private areas next to the stream. This is a terraced campsite surrounded by MASSIVE pines.

There are lots of walks to do in the area, a great place to stay.

The turn off to Mt. Thomas Conservation area is from the main road between Oxford and Loburn - well sign posted.

We recently had three great nights here!

Very quiet and peaceful and nice views. There is a lower and higher section to camp! Might be a bit awkward after a lot of rain. Some really good walks from here! Not sure on the toilet situation, but the blocks are still there. Good signal on phone and TV. Nice spot!! DOC Campsite Pass is valid here. @tasmantravels

Lovely campsite but let down by its lack of facilities and maintenance.

Toilets were portaloos but these were full and the hand sanitizer had long run out. This is likely the reason why parts of the campsite are strewn with toilet paper (the bush being more appealing than the provided facilities). My daughter discovered a large turd, like human, under some rocks on the grass. No water supply at all, fortunately we had adequate bottled water for one night. Not many campers when we were here but lots of dogs on-site, many off lead which made me nervous with a young child.

This is a beautiful area and the three camping areas do allow for some privacy if the top level is busy.

Note that the DOC info about the outside tap and basin working is wrong as of the start of November 2023 - it's not functional.

Spacious and beautiful spot, however when we stayed to toilets were locked and replaced by two portable toilets.

We were also swarmed by sandflies, so repellent is definitely a must.

    Lovely area.

Lots of trees with the open vista to a view across the Canterbury Plains. There were very strong winds with gale force gusts the weekend I stayed, however the campground is quite sheltered so they weren’t a problem. Great walks and fantastic that I could bring my dog. Top notch basic DOC campsite.

Huge, huge site with gully/creek sites and terraced grassy plain sites.

Suffers from being close to Christchurch with young kids on dirt bikes arriving to tear up the place. But the open south facing view over the plains from the elevated campsite nestled into the foothills makes up for it. Good toilet block, lots of walks to do - the small family loop track recently re-cut and gravelled so a fun easy walk for little ones through some different country in such a short walk. Great spot.

Filthy facilities, of the 4 available toilets there was no toilet paper in one and another had been blocked then flooded with feces covered underwear and someone used a stick to unblock it leaving a trail

of feces and toilet paper across the toilet and floor which remained in place for the entirety of our stay. The campsite rules are not enforced with at least 1/2 the occupied campsites having dogs with them and only 1 was ever on lead with the rest roaming freely. In one case 2 off lead dogs had an altercation.

Scenery is very beautiful and includes views of the plains and riverside campsites. the walking track is well maintained by DOC but littered with dog poo throughout.

Be prepared for a huge amount of sandflies, especially near the river.

This would be an amazing and peaceful campsite if the facilities were better maintained during peak times and the users respected the environment.

    Really lovely place to camp.

We did not use the facilities so can not comment. Wonderful views. Only two vans there. Can not mark this higher owing to pesky flies. Provided you are ok with them, then this is worth the longish trip along gravel road. We did begin to wonder if we would find it, but it is just a little way past the boys brigade private campsite on your right.

    This was a beautiful campsite.

We were the only ones there! Nice big flat grassy area overlooking plains and paddocks, or the option to camp down on the creek. Picnic tables around the campsite. Clean and basic flushing toilets. Very nice campsite, a bit of a drive, but well worth it.

    Awesome spot to camp.

Kids had a blast exploring the area. Great walks. Easy and hard. Stream was a real treat with awesome wee dams and pools. Loved being able to bring doggo with us. Toilets clean and in working order. Will be back for a whole fam camp soon.

Nice enough location, but the worst sandflies I think I have encountered anywhere in NZ (including West Coast!).

    Bring super strength insect repellent!

Big grassy area with flushing toilets.

Very remote but quite crowded. Very cold at night. Nothing special, view of some fields and forests. Not our favourite.

One of our favourite so far...we snuggled in near the stream and it was great to sit back and relax while the kids played.

The terraced site made for great biking and I think half the families there were child free while the kids hooned up and down! VERY HARD GROUND so prepare to bend most of your tent pegs!! The water is from the toilet basin so I suggest taking your own if possible as hard to fill bigger containers and well, hygiene?? Great walks and just a really cool place to hang out!
