Nice site with gorgeous views of the surrounding mountains!

Standard DoC spot with only basic amenities.

Such a stunning landscape here and probably great if you have a camper.

If you’re in a tent, sandflies were unreal. Usually love to sit out and enjoy the view, sandflies made that impossible.

One loo but it was clean and tidy. Rooftop tent friendly.

    Great view of the mountains!

One long drop toilet, felt overpriced when comparing the facilities to the Avalanche Creek site of the same price. But the location was incredible.

    Solid campground.

Two drop toilets - one of which was quite clean and the other was okay.

Flies were not a problem when we were there in Mid March, even when we set camp in an area of the campsite shielded from the wind. Large campsite with a single hut but still no issues with crowds.

Very quiet camp site set back from the road, lots of space and not very busy when we visited.

We felt like we were waking up in a picture post card. There were sandflies at dusk but ok as we had sandfly repellent.

Really enjoyed our overnight and would recommend.

Thank you DOC ( we hope everyone pays as it helps the upkeep of these great sites)

Lovely big field with beautiful views. Two long drops and a covered space for cooking/eating. Sandflies were okay as long as you stayed where it was windy.

Great effort by the council but sadly too many sandflies to even sit out and have a drink :( loved this campsite so was a real shame. Beautiful setting, great shelter for cooking and standard portaloo.

This is a nice little free camp spot!

Drive down away from the road and you'll find beautiful spots under the trees & next to the river. We hiked up over the hill and found a big patch of purple lupin next to the river.

Toilet is as basic as they come, don't forget to bring your own paper!

Yes, there are sandflies but they really are everywhere that whole area - Bushmans spray really helps!

This is a nice spot just outside of Arthurs Pass.

We stayed overnight during a rainy period.

The ground drains well and seemed to reduce the sand flies a little. Also, there were no keas during the rain... the National Parks guy said that they avoid flying in the rain.

Klondyke Corner is a rather big open space next to the main road.

Only suitable for self-contained motorhome. There is only a toilet with no water supply. Some campers get water from the river nearby. Not too bad a place to spend a night if not for the flies. Hopefully it is because of the summer weather.

This campground (and the one across the road from it) are BEAUTIFUL!!!

HOWEVER, be prepare to stay in your tent and not cook any hot meals if your only means of doing so is by being outside, SANDFLIES ARE UNBEARABLE!!! Literally swarms of them EVERYWHERE!! You can't stand in one spot for even a minute without getting swarmed and bitten...campervan is more recommended, views are gorgeous!!

Just next to the street, but good for one night. There's a cooking shelter and keas are often around.

We've spent 3 nights there, most of them pretty wet so we were grateful for the cooking shelter.

Plenty of mice, some sandflies. A couple of cheeky Keas - actually our closest encounter in NZ with them! (they hide under the car and start stealing as soon as you step aside). Great value for a free site!

    Stinky porta-potty.

Beautiful alpine place to camp. It goes quite a ways back so you don't need to park right by the highway. Just a short drive out of the village. Many walks around. The train runs by on the other side of the campground which is cool to see. Simple. A great little gem.

Our first night in New Zealand, after arriving in Christchurch and picking up the campervan.

This just felt so memorable, parking up in a simple field, fantastic views, real getaway from it all night. Would happily return. Glad we were fully self contained in campervan, as lots of midges, and very cold at night!
