Raetihi Holiday Park & Cabins

Halfway between Auckland and Wellington - and surrounded by Great Walks, and National Parks we are in the perfect spot for travelers to spend some time getting to see New Zealand.

We love our little spot here at the Raetihi Holiday Park.

In 2011, our family moved to Raetihi with big dreams! We had started Whanganui River Canoes, a small canoe hire company in our early 20's and needed somewhere neat to raise our children, and meet our customers.

We found the Raetihi Holiday Park - it was a little run down, and a little tired, and didn't have very many visitors travelling through. We have spent the last few years slowly building the place up, adding decks, repainting, landscaping campsites and at the same time meeting customers from all over the world.

At Christmas 2018 we finally saw one of our largest goals accomplished - with a brand new shower and amenity building on site - you really do have to come and see it to appreciate it. We have also built a couple of small BBQ Shelters around the Holiday Park, and made so many more campsites.

Our Holiday Park is directly opposite the Makotuku Domain, where you can play Basketball, Netball, or Tennis on the newly refurbished Courts. The Makotuku Walkway is a lovely riverside walk which runs through the Raetihi Holiday Park, and showcases our beautiful Makotuku River. We operate Whanganui River Canoes on site in Summer, and also offer Bike hire with the many Mountain Bike Tracks in our Region. The Tongariro Crossing Shuttle leaves every day in Summer - depending on weather conditions.

Our staff try really hard to help you with your adventure. If we don't have the best information for your plans - we try to point you in the direction of someone who can help you out.

We truly are a family owned and operated business, you will probably bump into our children during your stay, and see our pet cat and dogs too.

We hope you enjoy your stay, we try to keep our cabins in lovely condition for you - and have a new Smart TV in the kitchen/dining room for you to enjoy. Our camping and powered sites are all unique in their own way - some with Mountain Views, and others tucked in under some beautiful Native Bush.

Operating Season And Hours

We are open year round.

In Summer our office is open from 7 am until 7pm 7 days a week. Occasionally we do need to close throughout the day, or a little earlier in the evening so we can spend time together as a family - but we don't have a gate that closes - so you can arrive a bit later.
In Winter our office is open from 8 am until 6 pm, but we are often around outside of those hours too - if the door is unlocked, pop in - if it is locked come back in the morning.

    11May24.

    2 adults. $40 powered site.

Office closed so we set up for the night. Eventually found someone to pay the following morning.

The lounge, kitchen, toilets and showers were very good. Plenty of space in the showers.

There doesn’t appear to be a website or opportunity for advance bookings. This caught out one guy who arrived on a bicycle after the office was closed hoping for a cabin. Couldn’t make contact so set up his tent anyway. It was a very cold night so he bedded down in the lounge, good move.

    No WiFi either.

But for lack of website and no WiFi I would have given them a 10.

    $45 p/n for an unpowered site - 2 adults, 2 kids, 2 dogs.

We would usually pay that for power so were guttered but nowhere else to stay so it did! The owners weren’t super welcoming. But the unpowered sites were the best anyway! Views of the mountain, close to the really great park (a cool little treehouse, giant chess, sandpit the works). Amenities fantastic!! Brand new kitchen, brand new toilets and showers. Showers are spacious with 2 shelves to put your clothes! Hot & free!! There is a cute little river walk plus painted fairy doors the kids loved. A cool bike jumps track near it too.

Although not the most charming campsite, this is a brilliant place to stop after the Tongariro crossing.

The site has some views of the mountains, and is set back from the main road in a grassy enclosure. It was a little bit difficult to find a flat non powered site for our van but but the cooking and washing facilities are clean and well maintained. The showers are hot, powerful and best of all FREE! It was well worth the cost after being exhausted from the crossing!

All started well and was thinking of booking for summer, until I fell in a hole on my second day there.

It was a man-made hole, invisible at night and barely visible during the day...covered in long grass with a log as a hidden companion. I broke my arm really badly...spiral fracture to the humorous with butterfly fragment....it was and still is bad. I was stuck at the park for a week after the fall, despite the fact I was due to leave two days later and not only did the park proprietors totally ignore the situation, they even charged me for the time I was forced to stay. No one offered me any help, like a lift to the doctors. I was left to fend for myself, my 9 year old daughter and my dog on my own with only one functioning arm and the other one incredibly painful.

The 'office lady' tried her best but I've been partially disabled for nearly 3 months now and I'm struggling to get an answer to the question "Has the hole been filled in yet?"

This park was sold to me as being 'child friendly' and also 'pet friendly'. Neither is true. Please don't make the mistake I did! This web-site does not tell the truth and they don't give a damn if something goes wrong. So as the 3 month mark approaches, I clearly understand that this beautiful piece of land is managed by people who are too busy for their customers. It appears cheap and a good deal, and they say they are kid & pet friendly. They are not.

After reading reviews, expected a lot more from this site.

Owners weren't overly nice and are incredibly up tight about cleanliness, which is fine and understandable, but requesting my credit card details in case I leave a mess is taking it a bit too far. Only one shower (unisex) and has one of the two toilets in it. Glow worm walk would've been great if half the lanterns weren't out leading us to getting a little lost. When we finally found them my partner took a small step left and landed in a metre deep muddy puddle. Washing and dryer is $4 for each but the dryer only runs for half an hour and left everything wet! Not impressed.

Hi there Beth, thank you for your feedback - sorry your stay was not as expected !

NZ has just had it's busiest summer ever for tourism, and our Holiday Park did too - which was really fantastic, but as you can imagine with communal facilities, we really have had to remind guests to tidy after themselves.

Nearly every accommodation provider in NZ has a standard check in form and that usually includes credit card details as a request.

Our Holiday Park has five showers, and six toilets - and even better, we are working on plans to build an entire new bathroom building too which we are really looking forward to!

As you can imagine in the middle of winter it gets a little glum, and the solar lights don't retain the solar power quite as they should, however on the directions to the glow worms hanging in our communal area we do mention that a torch is required.

Our laundromat machines are less than one year old, and as long as they are not overloaded they manage to wash and dry all of our Holiday Park bedding on a regular basis. We hope you enjoy the rest of your travel throughout New Zealand.

Overall, this campground is great value for money.

It's clean and well maintained, and the tent sites are grassy and have the occasional shared table-benches. WiFi is good be reasonably priced. This campground is very convenient, if you booked the Whanganui Journey with them as well.

The only negative thing we could find was the old bathroom block – it was clean, though. Overall, we'd stay here again.

A safe place to park the car while away for the trip. When we came back we decided to stay another night and booked the cabin. Our hosts prepared hot coffee and tea for all of us to warm up. From a car-travelling, tent-camper's perspective: overall a decent place, safe, well placed, has great glow worms a 2 minute walk away, but bathrooms are a bit worn out.

Great clothes washers and driers. Two of each, $4 to run per machine, with hot water too! Kitchen is in good shape, standard style. Shower was hot.

Mixed: Wifi available, but not free.

Cons: One block of showers were straight rundown. The second shower available gets the whole bathroom floor soaked. Second, for tents there are 5 lights that shine directly onto the lawn all night.

Hi Scott, thank you for your review - great to hear you enjoyed your stay :) We do have one run down shower building we have been asking our council for a couple of years now to help us out with it - but sometimes things move a little slowly :/ We are proud of the communal building with the kitchen, laundry and bathroom/shower. The wet floor shower is pretty standard in NZ for disabled bathrooms. We do need to charge for the wifi so that there is enough for everyone - if we gave it away for free, no one would be able to use it as it would use too much data! But there is free wifi just around the corner from our Holiday Park at the town library which we always recommend if customers can't afford to pay. In 2014 we spent quite a bit of money landscaping a flat camping area away from the security lights, and there is plenty of camping space there - sorry you did not find that area, but the other lights are pretty standard security lights and are required to be there. Thanks again for staying with us :)

A group of 6 of us stayed used the holiday park to do the 3 day Whanganui river journey and its was brilliant.

We stayed in a cabin the night before and had a good nights sleep, comfy and clean!

The price of the trip was really reasonable, canoes and equipment in great nick, it's clear these guys take safety seriously. Most importantly they are really friendly and make you feel really welcome. We were able to leave our car at the campsite and get ferried to and from the river in the minibus as part of the cost.

We had ice cold beers waiting for us at the end of the trip-much needed after 3 days of paddling!

My only regret is not staying at the holiday park longer. Highly recommend this place, I will be sending people their way :)

Ben and Rebecca are lovely hosts (with adorable children who greeted us and performed their haka), the facilities are clean and spacious, and this is the perfect launch point for the Whanganui River Journey

. The owners of the holiday park also operate Whanganui River Canoes, where you can freedom hire canoes or sign up for a guided canoe trip, including transportation to and from the river. Canoeing the Whanganui was my absolute favorite part of my 3-week holiday in New Zealand, and I would highly recommend staying at the Raetihi (pronounced REH-dih-hee) Holiday Park and booking with Ben and Rebecca. They gave us the opportunity to pack our barrels the night before and gave us hourly weather/river updates when we were concerned the river might be too high for the trip (turned out perfectly!). Ben also operates a jet boat company, so if anything were to happen on the trip, he can come to your rescue! Also, you can leave your vehicle on site during your trip, free of charge.

Raetihi Holiday Park is one of the best places we found to stay if you are thinking of going down to the Whanganui River or doing any activities in and around the Ruapehu region.

Stayed here the night before we did the Bridge to Nowhere Tour.

The camp ground was well equipt, clean and tidy.

Mandy who operates the holiday park was very helpfull in all of our inquiries and guided us in the right direction for a fantastic two day journey at Bridge to Nowhere.

Thanks Mandy, we will be back.
