Information

Kerikeri River Track

3.5 km one-way | 1 hour 30 minute one-way

The walk is accompanied by the various soothing sounds of the Kerikeri River. It passes under a shaded canopy of lush vegetation and some almost pure stands of totara.

Walking Track

Access

The start of the track is signposted from the main parking area in the Kerikeri Basin. Alternatively, you can start the track from the parking area at the end of Rainbow Falls Road, off Waipapa Road north of Kerikeri.

Both parking areas have toilets.

Track

The track is metalled, even and of a very high standard, with footbridges and wooden walkways over uneven and boggy areas.

It follows the true left of he Kerikeri River, after 15 minutes passing the Historic Power House. After a further 5 minutes are the Wharepoke Falls.

The parking area at Rainbow Falls is 5 minutes past the plunge pool. The Rainbow Falls can be viewed by a 15-minute–return walk from the parking area.

Geology

The Wharepoke and higher Rainbow Falls flow over basalt lava fields.

European History

The Historic Power House was developed by George Alderton, a local developer who wanted to attract wealthy land buyers to Kerikeri in the 1920s. Their wives, who were used to servants, specified that to move to New Zealand, electricity would be essential. In 1930 the hydroelectric power station was built and turned on. It was decommissioned in 1967, but the generator and turbine have been restored for viewing.

    23May24.

A good walk from the Kerikeri Basin at the end of the Landing Road.

Not sure the time and distances actually match what is on this app or the info boards at the start of the walk but not too far out.

2 waterfalls. Both good in their own right but Rainbow Falls the higher, noisier and generated more mist.

Kiwi country but we didn’t see any.

Nice relaxing walk next to the river.

You pass some waterfalls and pools and go to the oldest store in NZ.
