Raglan is the surf destination of New Zealand. The consistent waves and distinguished boardriding history have made Raglan a place that oozes surf culture. The small town is packed with surf shops and many other businesses use Raglan’s reputation as a surfing Mecca to attract visitors.

European History

Raglan was first surfed in the early 1960s by Peter Miller on a hollow 10-foot ply surfboard. After Raglan featured in the film Endless Summer (a surfing movie filmed by Bruce Brown which later reached cult status) many American and Australian surfers visited to try the famous left-hand breaks. Endless Summer 2 was filmed in the early 1990s and was based on the same scenario of two surf crazy guys travelling the world in search of the ultimate wave. Raglan featured again, affirming its position as a world-class surf destination. Many over 60s still live and surf in Raglan.

Manu Bay, as it is also known, is one of the best left-hand breaks in the country and if the water isn’t full of surfers vying for position, then the carpark will be scattered with hopefuls waiting for the wind or swell direction to change.
