Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust
47kms of predator proof fence enclosing 3400 hectares in a sea of pastureland, it is the largest ecological inland island in New Zealand.
Eradication of introduced predators is largely complete, allowing native bird populations to be re-introduced and trees and ferns are able to grow uninhibited. This provides for a surprising new environment as the balance of species develops.

Great to see projects like his happening, and largely we paid our admission fee to support it.
The walks were good for plant info but bird life was pretty hard to find. I think the forest is quite mature so the birds enjoy being up high in the canopy and hard to see. My comparison is the Orokonui Eco Sanctuary near Dunedin which is a similar predator proof fenced area which seemed better set up for visitors, great interpretation info, cafe, shop - better graded tracks and lots of bird life too!

Great place to see lots of birds and native plants.
We had a tour to feed the animals, recommended but rather expensive. The guide was a knowledgeable volunteer, very good.

A very nice walk (many walks) where you can discover different kinds of birds.
It is also open at night so you can see Kiwi. $18 entrance fee.

It was a lovely walk and got to see some nice birds - but too expensive - especially as DOC has sites for free.
