Roadside vege stalls are one of those quietly great things about travelling NZ. Pull over, pick your own apples or tomatoes or stone fruit, leave some cash in the tin, drive on. No fuss, no packaging, no supermarket markup. The produce is usually picked that morning or the day before. Hard to beat.
Two spots come up repeatedly. Riwaka, up in the Nelson direction before you climb the hill toward Abel Tasman country, has excellent fruit stalls when things are in season. Cromwell down in the south is practically built on its fruit reputation - the town sign literally celebrates it. Plenty of roadside stalls around there, though prices skew a little tourist-y, so just know that going in. The produce is still fresh and worth it.
The main thing is timing. These stalls run with the seasons, so summer and autumn are when you'll find the most variety. Keep an eye out as you drive - they're rarely signposted far in advance.
