Hired the 2+1 for a short trip 2 adults and a two year old.
Communication before the trip was really good and all the questions we had were answered. The van was well equipped and good value for the hire price. Everything worked well in the van and it was powerful enough to keep up with traffic pretty well. A few niggles; the side door was hard to open as the handle is between the bench and door, and it needed a good slam to get closed. The third bed is OK for a child, but ours didn't like the safety net and could get between the bed and back door. The service from the team at Heron was good, there were emails to warn us of severe weather events and where the best dump stations were for our return. Would book with them again.

Friendly and professional.
Good camper van, compact but good for a couple (it was a 2+1, the extra space was useful for storage, I'm not sure I would want to put a child up there...!) Liked to solar panels and the USB charging sockets.

Hi Richard,
Thank you for taking the time to write a review. Fantastic to meet you and your wife and it Karolina enjoyed the correspondence with you to match you with the perfect camper. The 2 + 1 offers all the necessities you need for a camping holiday - a home away from home.

We rented with Heron, which is the brand of Euro which rents the "older" camper vehicles formerly rented by Euro Campers.
Considering, that we were renting a (I believe) 2015 campervan we were satisfied. There were a number of shortcomings. At return, Heron offered compensation, but we declined, said these were not as important to impair our journey. The only thing I have to criticise: since the provided NZ mobile phone did not work we tried to communicate with the staff via email. However, we did not receive a reaction to our mails. Later, Heron asked us to buy a new mobile phone contract (unfortunately, the phone was locked to Vodafone, which I did not know, when I bought 2degrees) and reimbursed us the costs.

Hi Til,
Thanks for your review and great to speak to you about your holiday and the camper on your return. We have reviewed our 'One Price Package' and do not include the cell phone, as many customers used their own device.
Lovely to meet you, and see you back in New Zealand again.

Friendly and helpful service, all-inclusive price (including insurance), smooth pickup and dropoff.
The Heron 4 is well-designed and the layout was good - the back storage area was very handy. Only issues were the fridge (not working great unless the motorhome was plugged in but I think this is probably true for many motorhomes) and the BBQ was useless.

Hi Shian,
Cheers for your feedback. The 'One Price Package' works very well - taking the stress out of having to think about the extras that you may need to hire for your journey - including champing chairs, bedding, kitchen utensils etc - a home away from home. Sorry, you had a bad experience with using the BBQ - sometimes if you light them up in the windy NZ weather, the flame doesn't burn as well.
Again, we loved meeting you and look forward to seeing you again back here,
Kind regards
Shian

A huge thank you to Lena from Heron Campers who helped us find the perfect camper for our anniversary weekend away in Lake Tekapo.
Lena also went the extra mile and helped us with itinerary planning. The camper was clean and well maintained. We will definitely travel with Heron Campers in the future and recommend them to family and friends.

We rented the Heron 2 berth for 20 days for our honeymoon and we really couldn't have imagined better.
The camper was spacious, cozy, new with everything you could need and an absolute delight to drive on the road. The staff was caring and always ready to help.
Wouldn't dream of renting anywhere else when we return. Thank you for helping in making our honeymoon such a special holiday.

Hi Thomas,
We were really pleased to provide you with the perfect vehicle for your honeymoon. For first time motorhome travellers - the Heron 2 berth couldn't have been a better choice. Due to the size of the vehicle, it is very easy to handle on the road and all weather conditions (unlike some of the larger motorhomes) and of course the compact living arrangement adds to an experience.
We wish you all the best with your new adventures together,
Regards

Dear Allienia,
Fantastic to meet you, and pleased that the Heron 2 berth was a suitable home for you for 21 days. The weather is a bit colder in June - generally snow capped mountain tops! - But the heating system in the Heron 2 berth warms you up nicely once you are back in the camper.

Normally I dont write any reviews unless they are super good or super bad.
I do not recommend Heron, we had lots of issues with the vehicle. My partner is a mechanic and he was shocked and said it's a wreck and shouldnt be allowed on road. Also the interior looked used and dirty.

The camper was ok, reasonably priced and sort of as we expected.
However it was dirty upon pickup and we were treated unkind by the owner. Be prepared to be treated as a client not a guest and you'll be fine here.

After my experience, I strongly advise against booking with Heron Campers Christchurch.
Travelling as a family of three adults, we had booked a brand-new campervan built in 2019/2020. Given that we were looking for a hassle-free vacation, we had also opted for a pick up service at the hotel and paied for it. A week before our holiday was about to start, we were told that this service ceased to exist and that we should go to the airport on our expense where we could use a shuttle. This was already unacceptable because we had paid extra for getting picked up at our hotel. Only after some lengthy discussions, Heron Campers accepted to provide the pick-up service.
The big shock came 72 hours before our rental period started. Already on our flight to New Zealand, we received an email that the booked campervan wasn't available. We were given two replacement options with a different company. Both vans were old having been at least 5-10 years in use and did not provide th same equipment. We were told to take one of those or we wouldn't get a campervan at all but a refund of our money. Being on the plane and not able to respond, we answered upon landing in Christchurch. At this point in time, the campervan we had asked for as a replacement wasn't available. We had to take an even older model! This was a nightmare and ruined the start of our vacation. Instead of having a no worries, all-inclusive package, we were stressed and unhappy. The replacement van proved to be a poor solution as it had several problems. This spoiled our entire vacation.
In terms of customer service Heron Campers was horrible. Usually, you would expect getting upgraded to a better van if the camper you booked was unavailable with the company covering additional costs. However, we got considerably less. As February is very busy, we had no choice but to accept their replacement proposal or not have a campervan at all.
This is certainly not a trustworthy company when your holiday is at stake.

We rented the 2 + 1 in March.
On the day we got the 2 + 1 handed over, we were picked up by the team from our hotel. On site we were told that the 2 + 1 would have to be repaid. That would take hours. It was a bit of a joke to say this on the spot and not when we were in the hotel. We got a replacement car for the time of the repair. They would call each other after 3 hours. After 3 hours, the message came that the repair would take another hour or more. After another 1.5 hours came a call that the 2 + 1 is now ready and we could come to the office. Arrived at the office we were told that the 2 + 1 would still need a while. After waiting another hour, the 2 + 1 finally came out of the workshop. Of course our planning for the day was broken. The communication was extremely bad. The 2 + 1 had already been returned to Heron Campers (tat office) for several days, leaving enough time for a repair. We had to wait about 6 hours. What a waste of time! The woman with whom we went through the contracts promised us that, of course, that day would be reimbursed. This refund has not been received to date. We sent quite a few e-mails and we were always promised that the credit would be transferred soon. But even after more than 3 months, no refund has been received. That's an absolute impudence. I would never rent a car here again! I can only advise against this unprofessional store!

A solid and trustworthy company with great, new motorhomes.
Good service throughout our holiday, and since they have an "all inclusive" package for their motorhomes, we also had the pleasure of having a portable BBQ with us along the way. Hence both good dining as well as accommodation.
Would definitely rent from them again if we were to return to NZ!

Overall we were very pleased with Heron Campers.
The booking process was straightforward and we received helpful advice. The van was just the right size for two adults. It was in very good condition and well equipped.
We had chosen this relatively compact campervan because we wanted something easy to drive on the steep and twisty NZ roads. This was our only disappointment . The basic vehicle was an LDV van with sluggish automatic transmission and poor handling on corners and was not a pleasure to drive.
The staff at both the Aukland and Christchurch depots were friendly and efficient.
The Christchurch depot was not all that easy to find.
We did, however have a fantastic trip.
