Access by foot or boat only - no vehicle access. There are a number of commercial operators that run either boat or helicopter transport around the Rotorua Lakes area, creating a variety of options for connecting trails or getting to / from campsites.
There is an increase in wasp activity and the likelihood of encountering wasp nests along the Northern Tarawera Trail and around Humphries Bay Campsite. Obey the track closure for the Isthmus Track between Lake Tarawera and Lake Ōkataina.

Basic campsites have very limited facilities so you need to be fully self-sufficient. There are basic toilets and water may be from a water tank that is untreated, stream or lake. Untreated water should be boiled before use to ensure it's safe. Access may be by road or boat.
