Te Ahiaua Reserve (Pipi Beds)

Water Front Freedom Camping. When you are driving eastward on SH2, Te Ahiaua (The Pipi beds) is the first place you can see the ocean.

It's a wonderful spot near the tidal mouth of the Waiotahe river, and close to the huge white sand sweep of Waiotahe Beach.
You're only 4km from Onekawa Te Mawhai Regional Park, where there is an excellent bush/coastal walk and numerous picnic spots.

Te Ahiaua has a shelter, bench seating and plenty of space for recreation. You must camp in the signed area at the eastern end of the field.

Located 8km west of Opotiki
2km from the Waiotahe Dump Station
No Drinking water
Maximum stay is 3 consecutive nights
Dogs must be under control at all times

Basic free camping along the route and next to the beach, from where you can enjoy everyday a unique view over the Moutohora and the Whakaari islands that looks incredibly close.

The place camp provides public bathrooms, pavimented parkings for campervan and cars, grass field for tents, and a small shelter that don't really protect you in case of rain.

I would say that the camp is perfect for a pause on the trip, but not more than that, the above due to the absence of other basic amenities necessaries in case of spending more than one night (like showers, shelter big enough to protect you in case of rain, drinkable water, etc...)

What a beautiful spot, new parking spaces which are pretty level and no garbage anywhere.

The only negative is the road noise, it isn’t that bad and goes away after a few beers.

    We did not stay here.

It was too loud and had too many people driving around in the lots. We didn’t feel safe. We chose to splurge and stay at the holiday park down the road.

One of the two excellent Freedom Camping offerings near Opotiki.

The outlook faces north and is stunning. Watch the locals dig for pipi's at low tide (or even join them :) The only downside is lack of privacy and road noise due to being right next to a busy state highway.

Big space but very unclear where designated area was especially after dark...

didn't have a problem though, very noisy from about 4 with heavy trucks and traffic on the highway... didn't use toilets but there are some on site. Need to be self contained anyhow.
