Pretty spot to stop, right next to the river and very tranquil.
Was difficult to find as the GPS took us across the bridge whereas the entrance is actually further along the highway. The toilets were clean but they are dropped toilets with no washing facilities. There is a barbecue but we didn’t try out wind turbines on top of the mountain which give you an indication of how windy and cold it can be here.

Really nice open field campsite with plenty of room.
The toilets are bush drop loos and were great last night but some absolute moron dickhead has dumped their chemical toilet overnight and now they stink!

Beautiful and peaceful, but the description is nog 100% correct.
We had a non contained vehicule and had to use multiple apps to find campingspots. This place was suggested by an other app. There were no signs about "contained vehicles only" and when we were there there were 2 other vans parked, both had dogs. A local even came to the campground with her 3 dogs to have them playing in the river. No signs they couldn't be there. There is a nice 10 min walk next to the campground.

Amazing huge grassy area to park up....right by the river.
We did the Gorge track from there.....and went for a swim in the River after....pretty amazing! More signage is needed though ad to where the track actually starts.

Stayed there for New Years - 2 nights.
Would have been around 20 other campers and plenty of room for more. Lots of dogs which were all well controlled. The wind got up the first night - a little gusty but okay. Second night (New Year’s Eve) the wind was the worst I have ever experienced and not forecast. Tents blown down and motor home/caravans rocking and rolling. Place emptied out by 8am. We left and got to the top Of the road and no wind!!!

Campsite well maintained with plenty of space, situated on the banks of a river.
The grass had been recently cut, there were benches and an outdoor bbq as well as signs with information about the local history and conservation efforts. The entrance is just before a road closure which is scheduled to last until 2025 (according to Google) but doesn't affect reaching the campsite. The toilet block with three drop loos is relatively new but unfortunately was not in a good state on our visit and was full of flies and mosquitoes. Better to use your own campervan facilities or stop off in town which has two clean, flushing toilet locations (one open 7am-7pm and the other with a 24h toilet). There is local wildlife so please be responsible with your rubbish and don't leave it outside your vehicle at night.

Large and spacious camp ground just outside Woodville.
The view of the river, cliffs and bridge were fantastic. It was perfectly quiet and peaceful throughout the night. Only problems were smelly drop toilets and no water, and just a little out of the way, but that’s just being picky.

Fantastic site, all the better because the road is no longer open over the bridge, so NO traffic.
That does mean you can only approach from the east - from Woodville. Only downer was the dude with the big flash van who thinks it’s ok to run a generator. No the site’s fault though!

Reasonably new toilets, huge open area to camp, right by the Manawatu river. You can see the wind farm from this spot which is pretty cool. Would definitely recommend this place!

Very Large and open grassy area prone to bogging after rain.
No wind protection or privacy offered at all, and this area is very popular with dog walkers and bored teens. There is no lasting beauty in this campsite, though the area is steeped in history and Woodville is a lovely little town. There are toilets onsite and back in town there is both a dump station and fresh water. Though I appreciate the effort it is not what I look for in a camp spot.

Big open camping area very quiet and so much room you can park in your own private area.
One of the best advertised free camping areas.
Access to the river.
Only downside was dog pooh in a couple of places.
9/10 only because of dog pooh.

A lovely wee spot.
Facilities include a block of three very clean and well maintained long drop toilets with loo roll and hand sanitizer, plus a free barbecue (bring utensils and a scrubber to clean up after yourself). Space for 30+ vehicles, although limited sheltered spots and only a few are really flat. It’s worth noting that there are no signs stating that vehicles must be self contained, and most of the ones camping here were not.

What a hidden gem!
This was a fantastic find. Huge grassy area right on the rivers edge with amazing views of the river and gorge and the two beautiful bridges. Peaceful and quiet (but cold in the morning!)
Probably not so good in the wet as apart from the roads, it's all grass, but we loved it. Would highly recommend!

What a great place, huge compound at the riverside, under two bridges.
You will always find yourself a perfect spot. Entrance is right after the bridge on your right (coming from Palmerston North), through a stone gate.

Nice place near a river.
Nice place near a river. Lots of place on the grass. The entry is not well marked, difficult to see. If you come from Woodville turn left right after the bridge.
