Its 54kms from Thames to Coromandel town its a nice drive that literally hugs the coast for the first 30kms passing through some cute little beach settlements, and then winds over hills that provide spectacular panoramic views of the sea, farmland and islands. Enjoy the scenery but concentrate where you are going. The drive takes about 50 minutes if you rush, but why not take your time and enjoy the beauty along the way.

Check out some of the the old baches (beach houses) that still liter this coast, drive slow as you pass through Waikawau – this little settlement is made up of old railway carriages. Stop at the lookout at the top of Kirita Hill and marvel at the breathtaking view that stretches out before you.
